30k is a lot for an 18+ yo tdi but what are your chances of finding a good low k one when you are struggling to find one at all ?

I missed a few right at the beginning of my search with 220,000km on them, by I buggered about too long arranging checks etc as they where interstate. There seems to be two groups of 300 tdi out there, low ish km well looked after and buggered very high km ones, it is the latter that seems to be coming up for sale recently. When I started looking I knew there was really one ore or two a week that came up, but I was in no hurry to get what I wanted, but my F truck is rebelling, the list of stuff that needs attention is growing and the fuel tank has just sprang a leak just to add to my woes. The missus Nissan has very high km on it and it blows a lot of smoke and also has issues starting. She needs to do a lot of trips to Townsville in the next months due to meetings and arranging the Queens (shooting comp). She wont drive my Land Rover (thankfully as she is clumsy .com ) so we need another reliable car quick. I was hoping by now to have found a good 130 for around 12k with the intention of redoing gearbox, transfer and over hauling engine and everything else slowly over the next couple of years, but hopefully the basic truck would be reliable enough to be used right away. I considered spending up to 20k if a resto had mostly been done with receipts, but 30k is really a lot of money, it would have to be a stunning car and I would still have to convince my missus which could be interesting..

I would not mind speaking to this seller, but deep inside I would rather do up one myself using a good low km one, that way the spend is not all in one go.

It's a 20 year old car, you aren't likely to find a low km one, not given it's a commercial vehicle. I'm sure there is the odd one or two out there but being in the market when one comes on the market will just be the stars aligning.

I would also take anything that is on a TDI odometer with a grain of salt. They are known for failing, and are easily swapped when they do. It's not like a modern car where there is effort involved in arranging a mileage "haircut".

I could have my TDI showing 30,000kms if I want. It's on it's third speedo in the 5 years I've owned it, and when I went to the electronic one I chose to be good and have it set at the correct mileage. Choice was mine though.

Mileage is irrelevant IMO. It's what's been done to it and how it's been looked after that counts. I'd happily buy one with a million clicks on it if it was in good condition and there were receipts for recent rebuilds of the major items.
