Anchor Defender Puma - Rust Proofing

    Hi people,

Just trying to get some opinions on having my new Puma under body rust proofed. She is actually around 4 months old now but intend on taking her on the Sand sometimes up to Fraser Island etc....
Is it worth doing or not ??...looking at DT Rust proofing in Maroochydore for the Chemical type as I don't have a lot of confidence in the Electronic ones.
Some opinions on this would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,

I've used Dynax S50 to protect the internals of the chassis rails on my 90. It's available in a 750ml aerosol spray and I used 5 cans. It didn't take too long to do, but make sure you tape up the existing holes in the chassis rails before you start (of which there are many), to minimise the excess S50 spraying everywhere!. I also used Dynax UC for the external chassis welds etc for some additional protection.

    There are some previous posts on here about rust proofing as well as on the UK Defender2 website, which also includes a handy corrosion prevention guide;

    Cheers.

I had mine done by Downey Street Lube in Brisbane. They have been doing this for many years.

I have done my previous vehicles myself, but couldn't convince myself that I could get in to all the tight spaces, without spending too much time and money on spray nozzles etc, to make it worthwhile.

I am happy with the result.

I went the full treatment with 2pac paint as my MY15 is a keeper. Not cheap but I'm very happy with the result.

    Cheers,
    Ant.

We had the Puma done by a local panel shop,as they had done a lot of vehicles.

They used Tectyl,a Valvoline product, sprayed it over the chassis and underbody areas, and also in the engine bay and battery compartment under seat etc. They also used a special sprayer to spray inside the chassis rails.

But after trips, particularly beach trips,it needs to be reapplied in some areas, where it has been sand blasted off.

I also had the D4 done by the same place.

Tectyl is available in a spray can,as well as in a 4litre tin.
The product coming out of the spray can is a lot thinner than the product in the tin,but easier to apply.
We always use the product from the tin,as being thicker,it stays on a lot longer.

I have read umpteen threads on various car forums about electronic rust prevention and come to the (uninformed, non-expert) opinion that it is total bullcrap.
So it was disconcerting last week when a guy who I know and respect came out with the opinion that it works. He is a sparky by trade, who owns a rather successful company that maintains lifts in highrise buildings. In other words, lives are in his hands.
On top of this, his work affords him the ability to own 8-9 cars including several race cars, and he knows his auto electrics. He completely rewired my car when I restored it.
And he thinks electronic rust prevention works in cars.
When I heard this, it was like someone you've known and trusted for decades one day revealing to you that they were abducted and probed by aliens. You want to believe them because they've never given you a reason not to - but what they're asking you to believe seems very far-fetched.
So now, although I would still never install ERP, and still think it's 99.999% likely that it's rubbish, there's now an annoying grain of doubt.
