    5 or 6 seater defender 90

    Hello,
I'm not sure if my request for info is an odd one or not.
I'm looking for as much info as I can get on what model/years of the D90 had 3 seats at the back. Also I see that the front seats can also be modified to have 3.

Usually we'd only need 4 ( 2 adults front, 2 kids back 9 months and almost 4yrs). But would occasionally like 4 adults hence the 3 back and 3 front.
Anyone have advise of certain years that have this for the newer ones look like they have 2 bucket seats at the back.
    Cheers

You can't really put a seat in the front . There is no where to put your legs . Some of the early county's had side facing seats , that could seat four in the back . They are rare , and getting quite old now . Have you thought about a 110 they are much better for a family . No problems seating , plus lots more room to carry other bits and pieces . They ride better as well !!.. Jim

Won't fit 3 in the back either. Modern 90s have 2 seats which fit inboard of the wheel tubs...

The tdci 90 ,about 2008- current had optional 2 fwd facing rear seats. LR imported a limited number of td5 90 models between 2003 and 2005 that could have 4 inward facing seats.
The issue with ALL defenders, 90 ,110 and 130 is that none have child bolts fitted ,which you will need like me. There are 3 options, in a defender are 1 a crab bar that runs horizontally below the back window behind the seats, any restraint authorised place can fit it ( I paid 390 about 4 years ago)and you don't need an engineer report, 2 a vertical post from floor which is a Pia or 3 , a place in Camden can install bolt points in the back of the seats like a factory fit when th an eng report , last I heard that was north of $1000.
Strapping in munchkins is pretty easy in a 110 but I imagine it would be hard in a 90. But they are a excellent 4wd and if I didn't need 7+ seats I'd have a 90 😀

You can fit 7 in a tdi 90, 3 across the front and 4 in jump seats.

    But bugger that!

The 90 looks a bit cooler and might fit in a short garage that the 110 won't, but after a lot of reading I went for a 110 and have no regrets. There's room for three in the back row, which can also fold up and away so there's room for storage, sleeping etc. Or you can even add more seats in the back!

I drive mine mostly in urban situations and have no trouble keeping up with traffic, parking, reversing etc.

Sideways seating and normal seating with no door is dangerous. Say you get rear ended and one of your kids needs out. Having a door means they don't have to resort to chopping the roof off which takes time.

Sorry to be grim but I work in emergency management. Seats without doors should be illegal in my view.

    Pricey

I could understand what your saying in a smaller coupe with only windows in the doors, but a 90? Um if they hit the back hard enough to hurt the occupants the massive side windows would be cracked and provide easy exit/access for any help. Get a search for real world accident stats uk and defender is still no3 safest after a Volvo and the Range Rover for fatality in 2 car prangs.
Really your condemning all 7 seat vehicles like discos any people mover and any 2 door 4wd like RRC ,D1 ,troopies etc?

Pretty much yep. I've just listened to too many Ambo and police stories over the years. Troopies are the worst though - not only don't you have a door but you have **** seat belts and plenty of other occupants' legs, arms and bodies to smack you as well.

But just ignore me, I'll go away

Back to topic - A 110 is a much better option than a 90 if regularly carrying people. Why set on the 90 and not a 110?

    thanks everyone for your replies.
    really really useful.

I've moved from a 90 to a 110 now. Much better for what I need.

    I'm pretty close to buying a 1995 300TDI 110.
This is the 2nd "worker" car so the extra seating does not need to be super comfortable and won't be needed most of the time.
    1) I'm struggling to find any details in Australia on how to fit a 3rd middle seat next to the driver. When I lived in the UK I often came across Defenders with this extra front middle seat and I can find seats for sale in the UK. I assume you just unbolt all the housing and bold on the seat and belts, but I cant find anyone that has done it.
It would be great if anyone has one fitted from this version of the 110 I could see a pic of. Is it legal to fit one here and change the rego from a 5 seater to a 6?
    2) The back cab does not have any side seats fitted - Its empty. Is it legal here for this version to fit some extra side facing seats? I'd not need to do the extra front seat if someone could sit side on in the back cab.
    cheers
    Craig
