Prop Shaft failure - Bailey Morris

UPDATE:

Received shaft a couple of weeks ago but the holes weren't aligned to the flange on the transfer box. Andrew at Les Richmond Automotive said that Tom Wood must have gone back to their original spec design which I believe suits the Discovery, but don't quote me on that.

So, he sent me a flange kit and didn't charge me for it either, which was jolly good of him.

Easy to install, although a bit of a bugger that I couldn't get the ratchet in there to make it all much faster.
The flange replaced the incumbent one on the transfer box and looks like a tougher bit of gear.

Tested same day up in the Watagan NP and Jilliby State Forest. No vibration, freeway was bliss, all the driveline slop has gone....well ok it's not perfect but it's better than it used to be, and gear changes are now a pleasure. Very happy.

Now I just need to work out how often to grease it. Any suggestions?

I find the comment about Tom Woods changing his flange pattern a bit odd as he usually asks you to specify the flange details to avoid mistakes. The correct flange pattern to give him for a Defender is A=2.375", B=3.125", C1=2.00" and C2=2.375". You can also specify a long travel (LT) yoke which will give you an extra 2" of travel which costs an extra $25 or so. Not everyone would have a use for the extra travel, but it could be handy if you need a shaft now but are planning suspension changes in the future.

I didn't speak to him directly. Andrew at les Richmond Automotive had a number of the shafts ordered and already on their way....when I spoke to him about the size not matching, he was disappointed and said that Tom must have reverted to the old design rather than the Puma spec that Andrew had provided him a couple of years ago.


So he threw in the flange for free and everything is tickety boo now.

Shame. I have a puma DC flange for the TW shaft under the house. I too use the D2 TFC flange and ordered the wrong part but in reverse. Happy days it's all tickety boo. MLD
