Awning mounting without a roof rack...

I am wanting to fit an awning to my 90 in prep for my OZ loop! But I really don't want to fit a roof rack as I cannot get my truck into the garage with one fitted!

I was looking at this awning from Oztent... it is 2.5m long... a bit longer than the roof length of the 90 which is 2.1m long.

I am wondering if the extra length would be an issue as well?

    Foxwing Awning

Does anyone know if there is a product made that will allow some sort of gutter mounting of a side awning please?!

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    Hi Pete,

These Eezi Awn gutter mount brackets may be what you need. I would not want to hang too much weight off them however, so I would be looking for something lightweight in the awning dept: Roof Top Tents and Side Awnings for vehicles - Accessories & Parts

    Cheers Nigel

We have a Foxwing awning that we used to mount on the D3. Last January we put it on SWMBOs Wrangler with no issues. The extra length does not impact its use on the Wrangler at least. The only issue that I can see would be if the awning was protruding over the front bumper line (which it wont).
The mounts on the Foxwing are plastic and I don't believe that it puts much strain on what it is mounted to so a gutter mount should be more than adequate.
The rear of the Foxwing where the hinge is should be aligned so that there is minimal gap between the roof line and the extended awning which means in practice that it lines up with the rear of the roof when folded.

What I did with my D2 was use 1xRhino rack bar mount joined to a 100x100MM piece of nylon breadboard glued to the roof with Sikaflex. This was at the back as at the front I have longitudinal bars which I linked to another Rhino rack mount with steel bar and just a exhaust type loop.

I made up a bent piece of strap steel to brace between the Rhino mount and breadboard and Bob's your uncle.

Oh , I back drilled 2 holes in the breadboard and countersunk 2x 4MM ? stainless bolts into it so they stuck up and put a nut and locknut over the steel bar.
This survived around OZ including GRR with no problems.

It is quite easy to remove and adds only about 10MM to height.

    Regards Philip A
BTW I learned the hard way to use a locknut and not loctite as the bloody bolts spun didn't they, and I had to hold them with multi grips then recut the threads.

    Thanks guys.

As always, AULRO has provided a suitable solution! Thumbs Up

Roof Top Tents and Side Awnings for vehicles - Accessories & Parts

They do a good range of awnings too... I will probably go with this one as it is quite light, but a good size...

Roof Top Tents and Side Awnings for vehicles - Eezi Awn Series 2000 Retractable Awnings

Will go for 4 mounts I think, not just 2.

Mulling the 2.0 m or the 2.4 m... I think the longer one... it does not go too far forward and is a useful 30cm wider.

I am pretty sure 15kg or so will be ok with the gutter mounts...

    Cheers, Pete :>)

I wouldn't use those gutter mounts without bracing them to the roof.

I reckon a branch could whip them off or bend them without a side brace and the weight of the awning is a twisting force to the outside.
