    95 Defender Transfer splines

I have a bit more free movement of the handbrake drum than seem normal, so I thought I would have a look at the condition of the input gear splines,
Got the covers off and then discovered the input gear wouldn't come out without removing the intermediate cluster. Bugger. Not going there.

Someone has been in there before me judging by the lashings of silicone gasket on everything. Don't understand the love affair with that stuff.

There is an oil feed plate fitted, don't know if that is normal for a 22D suffix E box. Anyway I could see enough to tell that the splines are oily and ok.

They will be getting even more oil now I have removed the silicone that was partly blocking the oil feed passage.

That leaves the question of the drive backlash. About 30deg with the centre diff open and 15 deg with it locked. Main gearbox in 5th, transfer in high.

Is this normal for a 95 300tdi? No unpleasant noises anywhere.

    Thanks,
    Terry

If the input splines from the R380 are good as you indicate
The play you are feeling will be in the centre diff
(also inferred by change in play between locked and unlocked conditions)

So either rebuild the centre diff or just yoink it and replace with an Ashcroft ATB

Thanks, yes I came to the centre diff conclusion. All seems well at the moment, guess I will know when I suddenly have no drive.
Still seems odd to have 15deg movement with the diff locked.

Well, I am going to stop worrying.
There is no metal on the magnetic drain plug, the gearbox is operating just fine.
The little bit of clearance in the splines (barely noticeable) is probably being amplified by the gear ratio, and there is probably normal wear in the diff at nearly 300k km.
I will see if I can find something else to worry about
