Surely the clutch is simply not fit for purpose. It's about time there was some litigation if this is widespread and not driver and application dependant.

My 2010 130 puma has had a clutch rattle almost since new. After the dealer who sold me the car said there was nothing they could do, "it is a Defender you know". Another dealer took it on and replaced the clutch which fixed the under load rattle for a while but it didn't take long for the clutch spring rattle to return. It has now done 116k. Anyhow having owned several Defenders and Countys before that which never had this type of issue or any others really i wondered how Land Rover mucked up the design? Would be interested in a more HD clutch if available as I think I will need to go that way at some point.

I think it's more to do with Ford cost cutting like the bad design/assembly of the adaptor shaft and the cheap nasty floor covering.
Mine 2010 110 has now done over 160K and I think it may have had a clutch change around the time they were putting in a new transfer box under warranty...... I also asked the workshop foreman to ensure they greased the adaptor shaft at the same time......response I got was "It is not a service item....." said with a curry takeaway accent.
Clutch still operates OK so maybe I've got a good one but as the shaft will e replace soon the mechanic will check it's operation.

My dealer not only replaced the clutch, spring and bearing, then after that, they decided they wernt happy with the result, ripped it out again and then replaced the Flywheel, master cylinder, slave cylinder and I'm telling you now, its never driven as well as it now.
Mines only 11,000kms old.
Brighton Landrover did the work, Im very impressed.

How bad was it before you took it to them for work? I am getting the same sort of rattle but quite intermittent (usually in traffic). Car is 6 months old with 15k.

First clutch was replaced under warranty at 40k and now at 84k it's really rattling like an old bag of bolts. Mines a 2011 2.4. I've been trawling forums and it seems like the people in South Africa use a Mazda 2.5 clutch, can't seem to find much more info so might have to ask the question!! Some have been using ford transit 4x4 Sachs clutch- my research says it's good to 110kw or there about so my BAS tuned intercooler monster can't use it.

I'm running on borrowed time so should get cracking on finding a suitable answer. Any input welcome

Its not a Land Rover issue, its Ford, the early model Rangers and (in the U.S) the Mustang that both used the same gearbox suffered the clutch issue. I suspect if you do a search the Ford Transit may well also suffer this issue, even with the dual mass flywheel.

I find it odd, actually plain and simply stupid really, how a repair shop can do a clutch replacement then decide, no lets do it again and replace parts they should have done to the job in the first place (play circus music).

Doing the clutch on a Defender TDCi INCLUDES the slave/throw bearing assembly, machining flywheel, any Land Rover repairer that knows this job would do it as I do in one hit.

It wasnt very bad, generally when cold it would rattle, once warmed up it stopped. But it rattled nevertheless. Take it to the dealers.
