    Online Service History & Warranties

My Defender is coming up for its first yearly service, only 2700kms and was quoted $440 by LR! I was curious about a couple of issues.

I know that you no longer get a Service Booklet and that its now an Online Service History (OSH). Having spoken to LR CustomerCare and the service manager at Southern Land Rovers I was told that ONLY services done by Land Rover are added into your OSH. I thought I read somewhere that if you get your LR serviced independently that if they forward the service details to LR that they add it to your OSH. Does anyone know if that is correct or not?

I asked the service manager what do I do if I get my LR serviced by an independent and want to keep a record of my service history and was told to just keep all the receipts. Not keen on that idea so have just ordered a Land Rover Service Portfolio booklet from BritCar UK and will have it stamped each service regardless of who services my LR.

I know that my 3yr/100,000 km vehicle warranty is valid if I have my vehicle serviced independently as long as they follow LR guidelines and use genuine LR parts. But upon looking at pg. 13 of my Online Service History & Warranty Benefits booklet it states for the 6yr Corrosion Protection Warranty that:

"Note: It is a requirement of the Warranty that the body panels be examined annually by an Authorised Land Rover Dealer. You should be aware that this examination is free of charge ONLY when carried out at the time of a main service"

So if you want to have your car serviced by an independent mechanic AND want to maintain your 6yr Corrosion Warranty you will probably end up having to pay for LR to do a Corrosion Protection Inspection every year FOR 6 YEARS, that sucks!

Has that been the experience of others that have used independent mechanics and maintaining their Corrosion Warranty???

And never underestimate the importance of a great relationship with the dealer post warranty.

A lot of good faith work can be done outside warranty if loyalty is demonstrated.

While its correct that statutory warranty is valid if Indy serviced- it's those other bits and pieces that having the dealer in your corner helps with...

And yes - you will end up paying for corrosion checks if you don't get it services by the dealer.

Honestly buying a new car if they told me there was no service booklet, I would not proceed until they supplied one. What happens when you sell the car or take it to a non LR service centre and they need to verify, or remote and need warranty work?

I went through all this when I bought mine in 2013.I realised when I got home that the log book was missing. Back at the dealership I was sent to the service centre where they told me it was online and proceeded to tell me how to update the information.I'm sure they didn't know any thing about it at the time. After trying to access their site,I made several phone calls (to people who didn't know what I was talking about) which were never returned.Eventually I located a service book somewhere on the LR website and printed it out myself. At my last service at Davis LR he supplied one,as he does to all his customers. If I was buying a Defender I'd like to see all the receipts rather than looking at something online.
As far as dealers go,I'm very happy with the mob I go to for warranty work and I think I would've been happy to go there for services, other than the price they charge.Problem is,If something fails, unless it's a recall, they'll only replace it with an identical part.If you want modifications done you won't get it there.I know one club member who religiously serviced his Defender at the same dealer from new,his engine failed one month out of warranty and the best they did for him was a discount on the engine, still about $11000.They blamed his mods for the failure, specifically the Mulgo pop top.

The comments on customer loyalty and getting work done outside of warranty are valid points.

The reality is i didnt need the defender as my jeep is still going strong as my daily drive, hense the low kms on the defender. But im thinking of doing a road trip from perth to tasmania in the future and the fact that the production of the defender was coming to an end forced my hand in buying one sooner than needed. So by the time i do look at doing the trip it will probably be out of warranty with only 30,000kms on the clock. If something fails during the trip customer loyalty might be the only thing to help get LR to come the party in regards to getting things fixed outside of warranty. Had the defender not been coming to an end of production i woulld have waited and bought one 6 to 12 months before the trip.

If a vehicle has a major failure outside of warranty but has negligible kms what are a persons rights unders consumer law and "fit for purpose " rights.? I'd be mighty annoyed for a gearbox to fail at 30,000kms outside of the 3 year warranty and have to fork out for the whole expense myself.

Good question. Mine is out of warranty by time, but has only done 76,000 kms. Previous owner used an independent.

Mine was out of warranty by a year and only at 70,000km - I had work completed under good faith.

I have no issues taking my vehicle on an 8 hour drive for a service, as the quality of that service and the way it is handled, is first class.

    Just some info...
*If a indy repairer has a valid sub, they can add schedule services to the online database.
*I supply service books now to customers new Land Rovers, it just simplifies life.
*I see new vehicles that havent even had their air filter changed, what chance is there that a "corrosion inspection" is done correctly?

    Regards

P.S Forget about customer loyalty ....... how about repairer/dealer loyalty.... you know, as in looking after a customer without the need to screw everyone over which seems to be the norm for the motor vehicle industry.
