    Talking Stalling Issues.....

I have a 2008 130 twin cab and just lately i have been having a couple of issues well one really but im thinking that it could be a number of things thats the cause,if that makes sense.

Well here goes over the last week or so my defender keeps stalling for no apparent reason for example i'll start her up from cold and leave on tick over for a minute or two to let the fluids get around the engine. Then it starts to sound if the engine is hunting and then the revs drop right off slowly. But as you press the throttle pedal to up the revs there's nothing there at all it won't rev until it stalls.

Then once you turn the ignition off then back on let the glow plugs do their thing and start her back up again with a few revs she's fine. Also if coming up to stationary traffic your going down the gears nice and easy then pop her into first with no revs then again the same thing happens revs drop off you press throttle pedal nothing she stalls and you start her up again and away you go.

My problem is that its very sporadic if that makes sense not all the time....??

On the occasions that its happened theres been over a quarter of a tank of fuel and it seems to matter not what angle the vehicle is on.

Is their an in line fuel filter that may need changing....?

Any ideas or thoughts what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Stevie.

Air con on or off? Smoke at all? Loss of power? Could be just a dirty crank angle sensor or cam sensor if fitted.

Mine starting doing the exact same thing last week,it's either the fuel control solenoid or Vacuum Control Valve, both are easy cheap fix's. Pat

Mine also startled this nonsense, cleaned the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner and seems to have sorted it. The sensor was filthy btw 75000km.

Mine did something similar last year, ended up changing the suction control valve or VCV, and problem sorted. Though if this is your issue you'll have to do a pump learn for the new valve.

I would start the car, and let it warm up whilst I got ready for work. On several occasions I would come outside to find that it had stalled.
Then it would lose power whilst going up through the gears, and on one occasion, whilst pulling out into highway traffic there was a total loss of power in 3rd. I was lucky that it was 5am and the highway was clear.

No I never use the air con and haven't noticed any smoke.

Mines just turned 100K so i shall keep an eye out for that.

Having thought about it some more i was thinking that it might have been a crappy batch of diesel as the times its happened I've filled up at the local BP either side of the town where i live or its been at the tail end before a delivery.

But fingers crossed i took her out last night after having been stood foe a couple of days and fired her up and left on tick over for a couple of minutes.

She started to drop off a little but then picked up again and this continued for a while until i drove off but she never stalled.... so who know's another thing to keep an eye out for......

Thanks to one and all for your help and advice much appreciated..........

I put up with the same symptoms for about a year, had the VCV replaced and they disappeared.

Would anybody be able to post some pics or be able to give me an idea of where this VCV valve and MAFF are located. I'm happy to to have a go at replacing the item myself unless any specialist tools are required

Thanks to one and all in advance for your help and advice......
