You may not be aware of this but fitting them makes your vehicle unroadworthy.....

From ADRs

(j) The overall diameter of a wheel and tyre fitted to a vehicle manufactured on or after 1 January 1973 (ADR 24) must not be more than 15 mm greater than the largest tyre size listed on the tyre placard and not more than 15 mm less than the smallest tyre size listed on the placard . Specifications for overall tyre diameters are listed in the Tyre and Rim Standards Manual, issued by the Tyre and Rim Association of Australia.

I wonder why the company fitted smaller diameter tyres to their display Defender?

One more thing you said you had got the following quote for the BFG
255/75/16 ($330 each)

I would investigate standard size 235/85R16 for your deefer - being a more common size it may be cheaper than $330

Not withstanding the WWW fanboi status of BFG I would also gently suggest you investigate Toyo Open Country A/T II or MT as a better option for your Cape trip?
Both can be found in Cairns - both will eat the PDR better than BFG

I also today removed my yellow Optima 40AH accessory battery, and busted a pooffer valve fitting a 120AH replacement to my rear battery box.
Bugger me those things are heavy but between it and the 200 Watt solar panel I have, I should be fine for off grid camping for 5 days or more.

I'm having a break, then fitting my 600 W pure sine wave inverter to the rear of my cargo barrier. This will allow access via my left side Gull wing once I purchase them. I think I will also add a gull wing side box and shelving to the drivers side so as to store my pantry.

I'll look into the Toyos. I must admit, I was only going with BFG as I've researched them a fair bit, but not owned.
Same with the forlorned Khumo MT purchase, they get a good report in general. I didn't check sizing issues as they came off the Sydney4x4 show vehicle. (Didn't that bite me back!)

A relation replaced his previous Coopers and Mickey Thompsons with Toyo ATs, which he says are a lot better for most situations and seem to be wearing well.
Another choice worth investigating is Hankook ATs or MTs as they are a lot cheaper, but seem durable. I just put two on our camper trailer as a test. Hankook is the fourth-largest tyre company in the world, but isn't well known here so they seem to be offering good prices to gain market share.

Hey Ken,
FYI, I had 235/85/16"s in KO 2"s fitted to the Tardis just after new years at Bob Jane's here on the Goldie, paid $300 each fitted. I have found them a fair bit quieter than the Conti's that were standard and seem to grip better, my first set of them too. A bit jealous of all the toys your fitting too. :cool:. I am getting some ideas from your set up for the Darling River trip we are doing in Sept with GCLRO.

160km/hr? That sounds like the bloke who picked us up from KL airport at 4am with a quick 60 min trip to town back in April. I have only had the Tardis to 145km/hr and it felt like an unguided missile at that speed. Was this your truck at the AGM?
