Aircon is standard on Ford engine Puma Defenders ( post 2007 ) and works really well.
However I suspect that they will be outside your price range.
This is the only useful first hand experience I have to add.

A definite +1 for getting along to the Expo in September. You will CERTAINLY see a lot of examples of defenders, most likely with owners more than happy to show them to you :D
