If not already said, go to the LAnd Rover expo 24/25 Sept. Google it for details. You will see and get to talk to like minded and somewhat passionate LR experts and punters.

The alternate is land rover owners of sydney club. They meet in five dock. Again google it for meeting times and dates. Some of the members are a bit too passionate to be described as rational but horses for courses.

Aircon is standard on Ford engine Puma Defenders ( post 2007 ) and works really well.
However I suspect that they will be outside your price range.
This is the only useful first hand experience I have to add.

A definite +1 for getting along to the Expo in September. You will CERTAINLY see a lot of examples of defenders, most likely with owners more than happy to show them to you
