Ashcroft MT82 Adaptor Shaft - install question

My 110 helpfully started leaking at the tc seals. Helpful as its still in warranty and gave me an excuse to ask the dealer if they would install the Ashcroft part given the box will be coming out.

Would be grateful if those with experience could help with a couple of questions.

Should the Ascroft be lubed at assembly, or no need as the oil will weep in pretty quickly?

Also any need to top up gearbox?

    Thanks

    Simon

I don't know about your question, but I'm pretty sure that the dealer has to use only OME parts. When they did my turbo hoses, I asked them to use silicone ones that I had, but they had to use the Land Rover ones.

    Good luck though!

Interesting... my dealer in NSW said if I wanted to supply them a part that was non OEM but clearly a better quality, then they would do that... I used the example of the silicone hoses too!

I think it depends on your dealer and how much 'commonsense' they have!

    More than likely.

I'm talking about the same dealer that said I had 20% left on my rotor.
I asked for the measurement, he said 20mm.
I asked what the original measurement was, he responded that it was 100mm.
    Bloody thick rotor!

They were ok to fit, with usual caveat it would affect driveline warranty.

I am paying the extra labour, even if the original shaft is worn.

Did suggest to them that if original was on the way to failure the labour should be warranty; they refused on the basis they were installing a part for me.

The oil seeps in almost immediatly, the coupling only holds a few ml's, so the gearbox shouldn't need topping up.

I suggest, as the dealer has to drop the T/C to replace the seals, you should ask to see the shaft splines, before they bolt it all back together. I can pretty much guarantee they will be worn, hopefully enough to warrant replacing. Then negotiate in regards to warranty.

My Defender is 2010 and had only done 90,000k's when the shaft was replaced with the Ashcrofts kit. The splines were badly worn on the outer edges of the shaft.

If they won't cover the cost of installation and say it could affect warranty, you could then go to a local Land Rover expert for cheaper anyway.

    Cheers for the responses.

I have asked for photos of the splines, expect they will be worn. If they are near failure will press again for labour to be covered, as to my mind its saving LR Assist a recovery. However their start point is its a part fit so no deal.

Will be discussing warranty with the mechanic tomorrow as after I dropped off this morning it became "no warranty on entire driveline". Waiting for response defining what they think that means and why a failure unrelated to the part should be excluded. I only have 5 mths left anyway.

Guess if it gets awkward I can ask for replace with LR part, should make the costs chat easier as wouldnt be part fit then. Will have spare ashcroft kit though.

My thinking on getting dealer to do it is tc is already out for seals. So they quoted 2hrs extra = $400 for labour.

Fair enough - but $200/hr is the going rate for dealers?

    That's just outrageous.

    Welcome to Sydney, nothing cheap!

Dealer has now declined to fit. However is inspecting the adaptor and will replace with LR part if worn. Have asked for pics, given we towed every day for 11mths last year, so expect it may be a bit frayed.

So that leaves me with an unused part, and the choice of selling it or waiting until out of warranty next year and getting an Indie to fit.

At least I'll know the adaptor is unlikely to fail in the near term, and should have grease on it!

    Cheers all

    Simon
