Thread: 300km service?

Pretty much reached reliable service life on majority of components.
Most owners have started to spend, or made aware of, issues to be addressed and typically decide to change vehicle rather than rebuild.
Even though Defenders are typically almost forever rebuildable, more owners these days are less inclined
Probably/ possibly because the cost of labour and components vs return vs a new throwaway car vs time, ability and tooling doesn't make much economic sense.

Not just Defenders though.

Yes 300,000km seems to be the tipping point for many major components in many different cars. Obviously with perfect servicing this could be extended. Another milestone for well serviced vehicles seems to be 500,000km (which is really a kilometrestone).

My 98 300tdi has done just over 300,000km. It's running very well because I service it religiously, but I have replaced virtually all ancillary parts, other than engine/gearbox/driveline, over the years.

The other factor is that vehicle bodies get tired around 300,000km, rattles reach fever pitch, rubber fails, weather sealing, wiring, etc.

Almost every vehicle other than Defender, and a few rare examples of others, is thrown on the scrap heap between 300,000 and 400,000km. Usually because of rust if not everything else.

I've seen plenty at 200k that are ready to be thrown on the heap due to total neglect and abuse and plenty over 300k that i would travel anywhere in australia at any time due to the exemplary care from owners and repairers over their life.

A defender is what you make it. Similarly it can BECOME what you make it, too.
