    Will this tacho work?

    Hi Guys,
    My question is, will a cheap ebay tacho work? I have a TD5 Defender 2005, with programmable ecu, ABS etc. Some say only the genuine one will work, some say you have to connect it to pin 19 on ecu harness, some say connect it into the alternator. Is it simple or is it 'buy an expensive genuine one'?

    Ad says works on 4 6 & 8 cyl cars. Yours is 5. Go figure.

    Most likely not.

    the cheap ebay tachos rely on picking up a signal connection from the alternator or a coil signal wire.

    you have neither of these.

    But I havent looked at the item my laptops being a pain and not loading ebay again.

    Though I am not sure about that particular tach, I can tell you definitively that you do not need the 'genuine', TD5 one. Just two months ago, I installed the VDO version of the TD5 genuine model. From memory, the VDO version is around $60-$70.
    Wiring into pin 19 of the ECU works, and from there all that is needed is to adjust the cylinder calibrating switches on the back of the tach to account for the 5-cylinders. You will know that you got it right, when the idle speed is sitting around 750rpm.
    Lastly, the TD5 would never reach close to 8k rpm's, so a choice of rpm range that goes upto 5 or 6k rpm's would be more appropriate. From memory, 100kph in 5th gear only has me around 2700/2800 rpm's. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    edit.....also, the alternator does not come with the appropriate attachment point to pull the signal from there on the TD5.

    I don't remember the name of the shop, but I googled shops in my area that supplied VDO guages. The part number is, 333 158.

    It works perfectly in all ways, except...... Th needle colour is orange (vs white- which I had painted) and the gauge can fog up on rainy days, unless you run the heater/ AC to remove the humidity inside the cab.

    After a little reading it appears as you would have used the 4cyl setting?
    The ecu sends out 2 pulses per Rev at 5v apparently on pin 19.
