Puma LT230X Transfer Case main shaft seal replacement

    Hi all,
My MY2013 Puma LT230x transfer case main shaft input seal is leaking, I inspected it using a camera through an inspection hole I drilled in the gearbox to transfer case housing.
Is there a way to renew the seal without taking the transfer case out.
Can the main gears be removed through the back of the transfer case to access the seal?
I have had a look at the workshop manual, even though it says the seal is an "in vehicle" repair the transfer case needs to be removed.

Popping the case off the extension housing is going to be the only way you'll get to that seal
It's not a very difficult process to drop the case off
But whiles it is off I'd be checking the splines on the input adaptor and replacing the intermediate o-rings looking for wear in the case
Oh and while your at it may as well check the centre diff

Removing the LT230 transfer case on any Land Rover that uses it is simple, the Defender TDCi (puma) is even easier as it sits a bit more vertical. That seal doesnt fail often though as its above oil level and there is no pressure on it as it only deals with splash oil from the gears.

As its a Defender TDCi (puma) I would be looking at rebuilding the centre diff while the transfer case is out, amd replacing the adaptor shaft between the MT82 gearbox and LT230 transfer case, if its a 2.4lt I'd be doing the clutch while you are there....

But if its a time and money thing, then just do that dang seal, a day if you are on your own, with no hoist or transfer case holding jig (3.5 hrs aprox for a workshop).
