    Rebuild??

Here's my current status on 200 Tdi with 167k on it. My mechanic suggested I throw in new rings/bearings while I have it tore down this far. I only tore it down this far to paint block. I didn't think it would need rings/bearing until many Ks later. Any thoughts?

I would have put new rings in while the head was off.....I guessing the crank shaft will need to be removed now?

At 167k it shouldn't need rings and bearings, but equally it must be at least 20 years old.

You sound like you are putting a lot of effort into this rebuild. If it were me and I had already stripped it down that far, I would be doing everything and putting a completely refreshed motor back in. You've already done the hard part, why not finish it off?

    Cheers,

If the isn't coming off then I would leave , maybe in another 100k but even then probably won't need them.

If you have it on the engine stand and the car is going to be a keeper why not while you have it that close as it is easier where it is than in the car.
Do the t/belt as well and new head gasket (Just for JC)
