    Diff Oil Change (Lesson Learnt)

So yesterday I decided to change the oil on the drive train components since I wasn't sure when they were last done or what the previous owner used.

Drained and filled the gearbox, transfer case and diffs gave everything a wipe down and proceeded to do a drive around the block before checking for any leaks.

Get back to my house and notice a thick trail of oil proceeding from my driveway so I immediately get out thinking what the hell could have leaked that bad that soon to lay that much oil and found the filler bung in the rear diff missing.

Looked everywhere for the damn thing in the driveway while I wondered how the hell it could have fallen out and then I had a closer look at the diff housing...

So looks like the old two finger tight is still a bit much for these diffs

I'm guessing from reading about others who have wound it into the diff housing that I've wound it in far enough to collect the diff which has eaten the bung and it is sitting in the bottom of it now

So now I'm in the market for a diff housing cover haha

Does anyone have any suggestions as the standard ones are pretty pricey for what they are and I'm guessing for the same price I could get a bit of an upgrade out of this mistake.

I've seen a few mentions of that which I might try if I get a standard cover plate.

The threads on this one is totally stuffed though, you can't really see it in the photo but the threads on the bottom are pushed down inside.

the ARB covers are good. They're expensive, but they have several benefits
    1. they are red and look like bling
    2. they give rigidity to the diff casing, which I'm told helps with shimming and bearings
    3. it's a diff guard that doesn't collect dirt
    4. it has a dip stick, however it's black and you can't see the oil level clearly
    5. it has a magnet in the sump plug
    6. it can be over-filled, ideal for a little extra lube if running oiled hubs

Couldn't you pull the cover off and weld a new threaded ring onto it?

Michael- Yeh I looked into those and they are only $60 more than the standard plate which isn't too bad considering what you get, I did see that you had to modify the brake proportioning valve as they don't fit with the cover however which turned me off getting one.

I ended up getting a standard one for $200 but I wish I had gone down this path though as my order came in later than I expected and I haven't even had time to do it yet with work so would have had the time to fab something up for the brake proportioning valve.

Hardtop- That looks like a pretty good kit which should fit standard, I can't find it on their website though. How much did that set you back if you don't mind me asking?

Don- That's pretty much what I am going to do with it once it's off and keep as a spare but I wanted it back on the road asap at the time and didn't want to be dicking around trying to make something work when I could just bolt up a replacement easy.

Still can't believe a flimsy pressed cover costs $200 ah well will hopefully get time soon to get the new cover on so I can get it back on the road

Ok just a quick update, i contacted APT Fabs today. They no longer make the diff covers as the cost of manufacturing has gone up considerably and for him to make anything out of them they would cost a bit over $300. each. Maybe if enough ppl wanted them he may do a small run but as he said they are costly now. Alloy covers available on the after market scene wont take a hit the way these covers will without damage. Pity, another manufacturer getting strangled by mounting production costs. APT gear is very good.

    Cheers Rod

I have no links to this company other than having one of their products and being very happy with it.

The APT diff cover looks like a copy of the Great Lake Offroad D60 cover from the US, and still available:
Lucas Refrigerator (gets warm in there)

    GLO Dana 60 Differential Cover

Whilst I like supporting Aussie manufacturers, the APT one was expensive even before his costs blew out.
