    Hollow Noise

    Hi All

I noticed the other day that my 2012 Defender has a strange noise emanating from in front of the loud pedal. It's a hollow leaking exhaust sort of noise. We have had it up on a hoist and checked out everything in the DPF canister area but cant find a thing. Mine has the canister but no DPF and it sounds like its coming from inside the canister. Do these have any baffles like a muffler if the DPF wasn't fitted in the factory or are they just acting as a big expansion tank?
    TIA
    Ian

Not sure if this is helpful or not but I had the same sort of hollow noise coming from the engine of a 300Tdi I had years ago. Local experts couldn't pin it down as it only happened sometimes and seemed to move!
Then reading a thread on here I thought I'd found the solution.... checked the bottom crankshaft pulley and there it was. Slightly loose and wearing the keyway as it moved.
New pulley fixed it and I sold the vehicle which is still going strong...... as strong as they can be anyway.

As all last model Defender are only EURO 4 spec, as you mention there is no DPF... but it does have a conventional CAT, its not just empty.

    Hollow sound on drivers side
*Check the long inter cooler hose on the drivers side, the hose can move down and rub on the steering nucke (BUT this does also have a lack of power and eventually a engine light).
*The baffles/heat shields are prone to coming loose on all Defender TDCi (puma) models.
*The top turbo/exhaust manifold heat shield is prone to cracking and the mount that bolts to the engine behind the A/C compressor is prone to cracking.
*The intake is on the drivers side and induction noise is quite noticeable.
*While Ive not had this.... check the plastic intake ducting joints, from the intake on the side body panel to the air box.

Thats all I can think of.....

Thx for that Dazza, I'll look into all the possibilities you listed.

Checked it out, I had a local guy in our work complex do the last service (instead of my usual Landy Guy, as I left it too late before a trip) Turns out when he fitted the EGT Sensor, the air intake on the back of the snorkel got dislodged somehow, refitted that, it was quieter but some of the noise was still there, so I kept looking and found the air box wasn't clipped back in under the drivers side guard. Thanks for the info Dazza, much appreciated.
