    Replacement Rear Brake Discs

I have searched in vain to try and find a step-by-step guide on how to replacement rear discs on a 110 Defender. Can anyone point in the right direction of a suitable thread on here? I just really want to make sure I have all the bits / tools before starting the job so I can get it done ASAP.

FYI - one of the discs on the rear is heavily scored and I can here a scraping sound when braking so I think it's safe to say it's had it... I will of course replacement both rears whilst at it. Vehicle has done about 50,000 km.

    Thanks

Workshop manual is the answer. Not much to it though. I'll take a stab off the top of my head. Chock wheels, Take wheel off, remove drive flange, undo wheel bearings, remove hub and disc. Swap disc. Reverse order back together.

If you want a few pics and more detail.....workshop manual.

Maybe only vaguely special tool is the hub nut spanner for wheel bearings.

Someone will no doubt tell me if I'm wrong.

That's pretty much it. If you have ABS you need a 10mm open/ring to remove Stator ring before you can remove bolts holding disc on but that's it.
If its a Td5 I would have a new nut ready and make sure you remove the stacking fully as you could strip the last few threads of the stub if you don't. If you catch the stub threads they are easily cleaned up with a thread file anyway. Replace hub seal regardless and replace hub and adjust wheel bearings. Again, if it's a Td5 or later torque nut to spec and rotate. Loosen nut, retorque and stake. Easy.

Quick tip when undoing the bolts holding the disc to the hub - attach the hub to the wheel (using the 5 wheel nuts). Place wheel on ground and stand on it as you undo the bolts holding the disc to the hub.

As far as the staked bearing nut goes (TD5 onward), I would advise a proper impact socket (52mm) rather than a box spanner. The staked nut is VERY tight - and of course the above advice about un-staking the nut first is good. It is all too easy to damage the stub axle threads otherwise.

That's an oldie but a goody!
