    provent oil catch can

Been thinking its time i finally fitted an oil catch can to my TD5 defender just to stop/minimize oil mist coating/entering intake etc. From my research/understanding the provent 200 is the way to go(not exactly cheap including hose reducers) but have noticed some other similar options on ebay for about 1/2 the price with 5year warranty and cleanable mesh filter and 19mm inlet/outlet(Oil Catch Can tank crankcase Small Universal Pro Patrol Hilux Navara 4x4 4WD | eBay) and wondering if anyone has tried these or similar and is the provent 200 really that much better?

Good luck trying to claim the warranty provent oil catch can
A cheap Chinese knock off isn't going to match a Provent and that one looks like a clone of a Provent 100 - rated for a 100kw engine (when new).

An older engine will already have increased blow by so marginal..

Add to that the Paper filter of the Provent will be more effective.

The provent has a colassasing (? Something) filter - the oil will flow down off it and I think it is good for 100000 km before a clean. I have a 200 in a 300tdi, pretty well dry intake now.

No, you need oil resistant hose.

I have a race car with an oil catch can on it. Its an alloy box in my case with a K&N oil vent filter on top. Much cheaper than the Provent and really i cant see how it could be much different??
Oil vapor collects and any gas is filtered before escaping but is not then returned to the engine. Does it actually have to? On high reving engines its not uncommon to return the collected oil to the sump either.

Returning the vapour into the engine to be burnt is part of the emissions requirement. You will find that not all the oil will condense in the catch can and stay as vapour. Eventually it will leave a black brown stain on in the engine bay somewhere as the vapour condenses on the cold metal. Seeing as it's a racing car I don't think a that's much of a concern but for a road going car it's an easy defect for the boys in blue.

Cant remember where I read it, but when I considered a catch can someone said something like this "Dont waste your money putting more stuff under the bonnet, just do more frequent oil changes.."

I tend to agree with whoever said that.
