    Wheel offset

    Hey

I work away a lot currently in Longreach and can't get to a tyre guy and was wondering if I change my standard boosts to steel Sunraysia keeping the same standard tyre size.

How far can I go with the negative offset to push the tyres to be flush with the guards? Is there any pros and cons

    Cheers

Standard boost alloy wheels are +33 offset. I am running +11 with Zu alloys and 265/75 16 mud tyres. With this combination the tread is just within the guard and the sidewall bulge can bee seen in the side mirror of the car. The heavy duty steel are +20.7 offset. The maximum track increase is between 26 to 50 mm depending upon which state your vehicle is registered in and the interpretation of the vehicle modification bulletins and whether you take the 20.7 steel or the 33mm of the boost alloy as the starting point. The above photo is with +10 Terrafirma wheels and 265/75/16 BFG muds on my previous Defender. The Zu alloys with a Bridgestone mud tyre protrude a little further.

No, +43 will push your wheels further into the guards (narrower track). You want +11 offset. 0 offset is a more common offset and will get a 285 tyre to sit pretty much perfectly flush with the flare

The larger the positive offset number, the smaller the track. So +33 to +11 to 0 to -10 offset pushes the wheels wider from the centre line of the vehicle and so increases track. Note my comments on legality previously as if there is an accident and someone picks up a large offset change, then the insurance might be voided. Tyres protruding outside the guard are a dead giveaway and also illegal.

While a wider track assists with turning circle and allows fitment of wider tyres on appropriate wider rims, the downside is your vehicle will be continuously dirty unless wider guards are fitted, especially if zero offset is chosen with a wide tyre. Also you must be mindful of the tyres potentially rubbing on the guard lip if you go too big. I have never had an interest in really wide tyres on a Defender but others have fitted them and they might respond with their experience and problems or advantages fitting them.

I recently fit a set of 16x8 +6 offset Dynamic steel wheels with 285/75/16 tyres. Airbagman bags @ 5psi (use them for towing camper) in the rear and HD front springs.

Wow that's a nice set up! What tyres are those??

And did that suspension set up change the ride height at all or just level the back out??
