The shifting mechanism will prevent direct swap in even if the ratios input and outputs were all to be a match
Let me guess its leaking from the intermediate shaft o-ring?
Hi
Can anyone tell me if the discovery 2 V8 1999 transfer case will bolt up to a 2008 Puma 110?
If so is there anything that has to be changed/ swapped over form one to the other to make work?
My sons Puma Transfer case is leaking bad and I have a spare transfer case from a 99 V8 that is ok.
I want to swap so he can still use the landy while the puma transfer case gets looked at so its only a for a short time.

Cases will interchange but you will have to swap the high low shifter housing and the rear output housing as you have no defender speedo transducer in the d2. And difflock wiring is totally different...

The shifting mechanism may be different but not sure. I recently put a disco box into my defender td5 it was a 36D LT230, in the td5 the difflock and hi/low range switch was different but it doesn't matter if they're not connected, one brings the diff lock light on and the other tells the ecu that you're in low range. The disco box had an identical speedo transducer as the defender one, i just swapped out the speedo drive gears (kept the defender one)

Yes the shaft is badly worn around the o ring and this has worn into the shaft hole in the case, so the case needs sleeving and a new shaft as well...saw the pictures today.
I also have 2 more transfer cases from 98 disco and 87 rangie that I could use as well if they would fit.

So If I wasn't worried about lights or speedo or being able to get into low range, just leave it in high range so it could be driven until the puma transfer case could be fixed over time it would work temporarily?...

You might be able to pull the speedo transducer off the puma case and put it into the disco case so you'll have a speedo, the rest of the functions you could live without for a while.

...there is no hole for the transducer nor drive gear internally as the disco has speed signal through SLABS. This means you'd have to also swap the rear output housing over. This is where the problems begin as the preload for the bearings on the main output 'cluster" is applied using shim spacers behind the bearing cup in the frontoutput housing and any variance in tolerance from a different rear housing being fitted can cause that to be seriously out of spec.

My approach would be this:
Bung a big ol' blob of silastic at the intermediate shaft to buy time.
Take one of your "good" cases with the correct gear set and ideally cross drilled input.
Strip that case, sleeve the case for the internediate, rebuild the case using new bearings, new seals AND an Ascroft ATB.
Leave off the shifter housing and speedo input
Then just yank the puma case swap over the bits that are needed and throw it in?
Will be a short changeout keeping the defender on the road (albeit little bit leaky) and an upgrade to boot with the centre diff!
