    TD5 running rough, no power.

    Hi Guys....

Few days ago started my Defender, drove up the road, was running like ****e , no power at all,...spluttering before cutting out.

Wouldn't start, left it 5-10 mins then started again. Drove back down the road, spluttering , running poor and with no power.

Since then, drained Fuel filter, no water....have ordered a new fuel filter anyway as way overdue.

Am thinking possible wastegate sticking or faulty MAF sensor.

Is on 116,000kms, new Turbo 6 months ago.

Since turbo though Electronic boost gauge has been doing weird things, like Is up real high...haven't got round to getting it looked at as I don't normally use my Landie enough .... and haven't had much time.

Any ideas on working out, checking whether either.

Am happy to order a new VDO Maf Sensor...just not 100% if that is it...

Are no LR garages anywhere near me I trust....

    Regards, Col.

Looking at the engine from the front with the bonnet open, you will see a plug going into the head (your left, vehicle right). It controls the injectors. Under the rocker cover there is a loom that is known to get contaminated as it is always surrounded by oil. This loom has a connector at each injector. Oil tracks down the loom and causes the injector pulses to flutter causing low power, rough running, etc.. It will also force oil into the main loom, which will eventually find its way down the wires to the ECU (found under the drivers seat). Worth un plugging the two large plugs and checking for oil contamination here too... Good luck.

What about the fuel pump? My D2 Td5 ran so rough and lacked power when it failed.

    As noted already...

*Injector harness needs replacing and also clean out the plug that goes into it. (random fault codes that dont always make sense)
*Oil has got into the red plug on the ECM or worse inside, needs cleaning (codes as above)
*If missing and rough all the time, its relatively common for a injector to fail (or rather the solenoid on the injector) (fault code for injector number (insert number here) open circuit)
*Fuel pressure regulator is leaking (no codes)
*Very rare, (common on TD5 Discovery 2, rare on TD5 Defender) but the in tank fuel pump can fail, with ignition on, listen for pump, as a general rule if loud and proud, its ok, excessive noise its purging air out of fuel system. (no codes)

    Thanks....

ECU injector Loom- I replaced this some 6 -10 months ago, before Turbo was done.

Will have a listen up and see how Fuel pump is going (or sounding).....

Then will be putting new fuel filter on as have ordered one anyway.....even though when I drained the old one it looked okayish..... Is overdue for changing anyway!

And having a look at the Wastegate valve and MAP sensor.....

not quite sure how to check on MAF sensor, to see if faulty or not......

    Cheers, Col.

This happened to 130 td5 and was caused by the fuel pump relay failing, replaced relay and a couple of years later same issue, this time the relay wiring terminals were 'corroded' giving a dry joint connection. Vehicle always garaged and generally used for long distances so put it down to the relatively high constant current load and dissimilar metal connections. Purchased a (over) large rating relay with large spade connections from Jaycar, cleaned wires and soldered spade connectors....no issue since.
If you examine the relay (drivers seat box) it often displays signs of distress, burnt contacts, slight casing damage.
