95 Defender original radio wire colours??

Hi guys, I have a 95 Defender 110 and am wanting to replace the original radio. My problem is finding out with absolute certainty what the existing wire colours mean. I know which are the speaker wires so no problems with that but there are four extras.
They are red, pink, black & grey.

From what I've found so far, they are:
red either accessory or positive feed from battery
pink either accessory or positive feed from battery
black ground (seems to be universal agreement on that one)
grey illumination - apparently or could be either accessory or positive feed from battery

From pictures I've seen and sites I've visited I can't find an authoritative statement to confirm each wires purpose.
I tried using a multimeter but I think I broke it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    cheers Gerald
ps I did post this in the comms section but no reply

I can't promise, but I think your in right path.

    Red will be accessory +ive
pink (purple maybe) is direct battery +ive
    black earth
grey, not sure sorry. If I get enthused, read remember, I'll slide mine out of dash in a few hours, although mine is a bodged in aftermarket one some idiot fitted

Grab a bit of wire and a 12v globe to make a test light.
You only have to confirm the acc + or permanent power line.
Find either and the other is decided by default95 Defender original radio wire colours??
Get it round the wrong way will only cause your station memory to be lost every time you shut down.

Ok thanks gents - I tried my new multimeter (an expensive one from Jaycar - $25 - how are they made and sold so cheaply?)
Anyway, this time rather than trying to close the circuit through the wires themselves I decided to earth onto the seat bolts - bingo.
    So, the undeniable result is:
    Pink - positive from battery
    Black - negative from battery
Red - switched active from accessories
Grey - who knows? - couldn't get that to work with lights, accesssories or anything else? Will try to test that one further tonight but at least the red and pink are now known.
Also pleasing to get the same voltage coming through the accessories as directly from the battery feed. Surprising for an old defender!
thanks again gents - will let you know the outcome of the mystery grey wire if I can determine it
    cheers Gerald

    Hey Gerald

If you are going to 'throw away' the factory radio I would be happy to take it off your hands if you have the security code??

G'day - check our your request from 23rd April. I replied to it a couple of weeks ago.
Hahaha - things get lost on this site, eh?
Short answer is - sure - yes, I have the code as well. Just got to get the new one in but that won't really be for a couple of weeks now cos I'm under the pump at work. Been working all day today (Sunday)- much to my disgust. Can you please send me a text to 0466 998 400 in a week or two to remind me. I won't give it away to anyone else, I probably will just need a kickstart so I don't forget.
    cheers Gerald
