you can use a voltage sensitive relay, $45 on ebay for a narva one, which disconnects the two batteries at 12.7v and connects them for charging at 13.3v
I'm trying to sort out a low voltage cut off set up for my main battery but I'm unshure what the minimum( or near) voltage a td5 requires to start, anyone have any ideas??
I've found one that cuts out at 11.5 volts but I'm thinking that may be a bit low
Cheers mark

Hi mfc, what exactly are you trying to do?
Just testing the cut out voltages on an engel fridge...... planing to wire a plug onto the seat box , but having been caught before( twice) I'm planing to set up a low voltage( still able to start car) disconnect, and was wondering what voltage a td5 needed to start.

Change the cut-out voltage on the Engle up to 11.5v, You may end up with hot beer but you should be able to start the car

Nah trout 11.5 v just ticks the relay on a td5......so warm beer after it hits 11.5 v and no go..
Weird thing is as hard as I try I can't get the redarc to jumpstart of a starting battery and a 105 ah deep cycle..

Maybe your cranking battery is giving up the ghost, how old is it ?

SubscriberOne of the things that I have noticed is that on a TD5 the ECU capacitors and maybe glow plugs pull down the starting battery voltage by heaps when the ignition is turned on.
I have a digital Volt meter and the drop can be from 12.6 to 11.95Volts.
I have an ABR battery controller which disconnects at 12.4 volts and have never had a starting problem.
Starting battery is a 4.5 year old Optima Blue top positioned near the turbo.

Battery's are fine it's user error , just trying to remove me from the circuit , I'll give 12.4 a try...it's only to run accesorys of while driving( camera battery's aaa bats and occasionally the fridge while driving so as to not suck to much out of the deep cycle after I've filled it with warm beer) idea is to cut the accessory socket and set of a buzzer to remind me

I do know that from recent experience that an 80w solar panel will charge from no turn over flat to start in close to a day and a half
