Stupid placement of TD5 Oil filter.

Just serviced my 2005 TD5, and spent 2 hours trying to get the oil filter off. What a stupid place to put it. At least they could have re routed the pipe that sits 10mm below the filter, so a oil wrench can fit on it. With turbo downpipes, and other hot parts of the engine, I did not want to use the old screw driver through the side trick as I did not want oil everywhere.

Had to buy a wrench that came apart, and feed the band around the filter. This took a bit of time also, as there was not much room.

Finally got it loose, and low and behold, had to tip the filter on it's side to get it out. Ended spilling oil all over the subframe anyways.

Would like to find the designer and punch him in the nose.

    Rant over.

The Land Rover filter is longer than aftermarket in my experience. I use an oil filter wrench (like oversized multigrips) for all the oil filters - from the Honda to the Land Rover and everything in between.
Sounds similar to my last change though. Oil filter out was relatively easy; couldn't get the same size new one back in without cursing and somehow getting it stuck in odd positions?!!!

I find the best tool to use is a filter wrench which has a spring steel band with punched dimples in it which is tightened by turning a screw adjuster.
It slips over the filter is tightened then turned a bit , repeat until you can move it by hand.

I have a strap type that has a 1/2" square drive. It slips up there easily, and I just use a socket extension.

Take a long screwdriver and place it on the top of the oil filter near where the seal is
Then give it a couple of taps with a hammer and even the tightest oil filter will come loose really easy and no more than a couple of minutes.
Also check that they are tight from time to time as they can come loose

If they're tightened to specs you should be able to undo it by hand. First time I did mine I had to punch a screwdriver through it as it had been done up so tight none of my filter removal tools would budge it. I have no trouble doing them by hand these days.

As above using oversize multi grips, loosen, then a plastic shopping bag from under the filter covering it all, one hand holding the bag upright the other unscrewing the filter and plop! filter and oil go in the bag!, oh I do it warm/cold.

If you think the TD5 filter is bad then you will absolutely hate changing the oil filter on a 2006 Hilux 4cyl diesel engine
