Thread: just wanna kick the can around for a bit if i may ....

I'm new to defender ownership but will share what I've learned thus far. I have a MY16 puma 90 which, so far, has been a rock solid platform (apart from a few minor niggles that don't relate to the engine or driveline). The lads on here can help you much more with the td5 version, but as far as pumas go, it seems that the 2.2 models addressed issues that some 2.4 models had i.e. clutch reliability, engine noise. Either version though responds well to tuning, something I will look into once my warranty expires. And the anti-stall and idle up features are awesome!

As far as cost goes, the later models have high asking prices at the moment due to end of production and claims that every one on carsales is 'the last of its kind' . I don't see much turnover so will have to see what the new defender does to the market.

The 110 does have a larger payload than the 90, and obviously more space making it the best choice for an overland trip. Seems there's a lot more options for things like extra fuel and water tanks underbody than on the 90 too.

Its an MY16, I actually bought one of, if not the last brand new ones in aus from the dealer. Had 14kms on it, and lets just say that I paid less than a lot of the carsales ads for a used MY15-16!

IMO you first should determine what your budget is, then allow for another $1500 for unknown/unforeseen repairs. (same as any vehicle)
This will then determine what vehicle features and accessories you will have.

With the obvious exception of engine gearbox config and a prettier dash, Defender is a Defender.
Which year model to choose becomes irrelevant in many budget cases and it is more important to find a well cared/sorted vehicle than thinking over model specifics.

Without doing this many folks go around in circles and typically end up buying an unsuitable vehicle through emotions or unrealistic expectations.
If a Mulgo pop top is on the cards talk to Daniel first.

Daniel owns mulgo, he's a nice bloke and helpful.
i bought my rock sliders ( and he showed /helped me how to fit them in his worships driveway at no cost) and he put in my Xbox , moving all the Ecu/electric bits from under the seat.as well. I've looked at the pop tops and they are very nice work.
Back on topic, the reason I bought my 02 defender was that it was the last with a Salisbury rear axle , which is a fair bit stronger than the rear axles that came after that point. Yes it hangs a bit lower , but you can fit and forget a Detroit rear auto locker with hytuff axles/ flanges and combined with the traction control and a front ATB ( definitely get stronger cv's and front axles if doing this with bigger rubber)will go almost anywhere. It also has a flashable Ecu which earlier models didn't.
You will definitely want a long range tank, just remember, that if you fit the auxiliary as well it limits your tyre size to 33in max I think, also if you fit a larger 120ish litre main tank,the rear tow bar needs to be a Hayman Reece or ARB as the stock bar blocks the fitting of a larger tank.
The other thing is fit a rear wheel carrier , especially if your going to increase tyre size.
On car sales etc stockish td5's are $24-28k ,with modified ones like mine $30-35k. ( I listed them on other thread "defenders on carsales")

I'm still researching myself as to which direction to go - Td5 or Puma.... I'm mainly leaning towards a Puma mainly for the better gearing in 1st High when wanting to take off on a incline and towing at the same time +having 6 gears will be an advantage if/when we want to tow a caravan, etc.

Bang for buck though, it appears u get better value for money with a TD5 as the Pumas seem to be overpriced still.....
