    Smoky 300fdi def

Hi ,my 300tdi blows quite a cloud of black smoke ,especially on startup or acceleration
have made sure filters are clean - any other things to look at?
The engine has done 350 k ,uses no oil or water and is otherwise apparently healthy

Sounds normal, the smoke at startup all tdi's do that and at that mileage they smoke on acceleration.
Turbo is probably due for a rebuild.

Fuel injection pressure and pattern is very important for proper burning of the mixture. I just had my injection pump overhauled as is was leaking out the throttle spindle, and a new set in injectors. I went from what you describe, thick smoke on throttle to a very light haze at full throttle on boost.
I replaced turbo a few years ago cause the compressor blades were damaged but air delivery is only part of the equation.
Oh, I got a 300tdi with 430000 on it, got the overhaul about 10k ago

    Fuel quality

try some different fuel suppliers. Sometimes the cheapies have other stuff in the mix.

thanks for those thoughts- cant help watching other tdi s ,they certainly all smoke, some more than others. Mine seems one of the more! Am reluctant to visit a diesl place as experience says you dont walk out less than $1000 lighter. Its still goes and pulls well so will maybe try only caltex fuel which i m told is best and maybe an injector cleaner

Do you have an exhaust temp gauge(EGT)?
    If so, what readings?
If not, don't play around with the pump fuelling.
If not(again) get one and start playing around with the fuelling!

That's basically what I did with my D1 not long after I got it.

Also still worth checking out how much oil you have(or haven't) got in your induction system.
Check intercooler hose from top of intercooler to inlet manifold for oil.

    two grades of diesel

Was reminded on a quick trip down to Port Macquarie that there is truck and car diesel. Truck diesel doesnt have the anti foaming agent among other things. Our local Caltex only sells car diesel due to the number of car users. About 2 cents a litre different.
