4x4 Outdoor Tuning :: 6 point external Roll Cage, NAS, for Defender 110 Station Wagon 4-door
Just wondering if anyone/company has developed a production roll cage for the 110? I'm interested in making one if there isn't one available.
The reason why:
Well for the first time ever, I rode in the rear of my Defender as my 16 year old son(L plates) drove with his mother in the front.....
My son has been taught the art of gear changing in a Defender mind you.....
I know, it was a moment in history for me too...
Anyway, as we drove along a very corrugated road, I saw for the first time the amount of movement the body has when being shaken by a rough road. Especially with an ARB roof rack on. I was shocked. Now I've repaired many a spot weld, and pop rivet, on older Defenders due to body flex. Now I know why these things rattle and leak.
All Defender owners will also have see the movement between the drivers door and the roof when driving over rough roads. You can also see significant movement when slamming the rear passenger doors. Overall this entire structure is quite weak.
I'd like to brace, as best I can, the body from this excessive movement. My first thoughts are to fabricate a roll cage, which would withstand a proper rollover, but also pick up on mounts for the unused third row passenger overhead handles to brace both lateral and longitudinal movement. The roll bar would be mounted just behind the rear seats, inline with the roof lining seam. Crossed braced to the mudguards with sufficient load spreading (Chassis would be better, but would really reduce usable space, any ideas welcome), and also would be diagonally braced from the top of the roll bar to the rear corner of the mud guards.
What are peoples thoughts?
After all this, someone is going to post a one line link to an already manufactured product..........Suits me..
Thanks

SubscriberI can't see many of these types of cages being too effective in the event of a serious rollover. There is no bracing (triangulation) that provides the necessary rigidity. I reckon most of them would rack (collapse like dominoes) if a rollover involved multiple rotations.

SubscriberThe Safety Devices cage goes through the body then mounts to the chassis. Pretty strong set up when you see it in person.
