    Diesel Tank Options

    Hi All,

    Landie is stuck down in Uluru, It will be coming home soon via truck......

    It has a diesel tank leak and the labour was a bit of killer of getting it sorted there. Plus the waiting around etc etc. Trucking home was better option with AANT picking up some of the cost.

    So now considering my options.

    Get new Defender tank

    Get long range tank


    I have done some research and it seems that

    the TD5 110 is not an easy fit.

    Range Rover Classics share same tank, but not sure if 2nd hand long range tank from Rangie will fit.


    Other option I was thinking, is just get standard new tank and auxilary 45 litre tank in rear wheel well. That way if I have one leak, I still have other to get me home

    Any advice would be grateful.

    I fitted a 134 litre LRA tank to my 110 puma tricky job fitting it in as the fuel lines are not long enough to connect up while tank is on the floor. Good mod as I like a long range between refuels. Did crack after about 2 years but dropped it out had it welded and a reinforcing plate welded over the crack. The leak would not of stopped me getting home it was only a small weep about 1/4 of the way down the tank

    A couple of things.
    I think you'll have trouble getting the 45 L wheel arch tank as I don't think Front Runner import them anymore. Murray at the expedition center should know.
    They do drain straight into the main under gravity, so if you lost your main you would lose the 45 L as well.
    Have a think about contacting Shingleback on this site thru the Veranda, he does a 75 under sill tank for Defenders in 110. you will only get a RHS side tank currently.

    cracked fuel tank td5

    Hi I'm not sure about the TD5 tank but the tdi tank is made of steel, and can be soldered up with plumbers solder. I did mine about 10 years ago after it got some pitting corrosion holes from the outside. Caused by mud getting between the protection plate and the tank. I cut a lot of slots in the protection plate to allow me to hose out the gap between the tank and protection plate. I think there a story somewhere on Aulro, about it.

    I have a 42 liter sill tank fitted 15 years ago, made from 2 mm mild steel with internal baffles, it s mounted onto the chassis under the drivers seat using a fabricated out rigger and using land rover shock absorber rubber washers. ( the factory tank has similar mounting I think). I think its important how the tank is mounted, if its hard bolted to the chassis, youre asking for trouble. My aux tank is completely separate from the main tank, it has its own suction, return, and gauge level sender. I purchased 2 three way ball cocks and ganged them together, the operating lever is on the front of the drivers seat box, the tank can be changed over on the run. A microswitch changes over the fuel tank level transmitter, for the dash gauge. Separate sill tank is the way to go IMV, or big aussie made long range steel tank properly mounted.

    Mine had a 109 litre main tank fitted when I bought it. Think it's a Long Ranger.

    whilst the RR classic and defender tanks look simalar,
    the mountings are different because the rear crossmember is different.
    if you have a TD5 defender, even a 'mounting modded' RR tank will need to be adapted to fit the expensive and unreliable submersible high pressure pump.
    not worth while ideas, unless you are next to a dead Classic RR in the outback with lots of time and some tools...

    I have a TDI Defender.

    At this stage, I am going to get a welder to try and fix it insitu... Then will look at options from there

    I’ve got a rear 127 litre Lone Ranger replacement tank, left side sill 55 litre LRA and right side sill 65 litre LRA.
    Its great to not have to worry about fuel on longer trips, and not have jerries on the roof.
    About 2000kms on Road, 1000kms towing my van.
    2012 110.

    if you can reach the offending hole with your fingers there are plenty of 2 part putty options to fix it available.
    Back in the day we used to carry a bar of soap in the toolbox as this could make a temporary repair in a leaking tank.
