Yea i would imagine the trigger should go to the starter relay, bit hard to see but looking at that wire it has a female terminal on the end. Which i would suggest would go onto the blade terminal on a relay. You might find someones messed with the wiring to fix a past fault so it might not be the same as what you would expect from factory but check this link out for wiring diagrams http://www.landroverweb.com/Pdf-file...%20Diagram.pdf
You could always turn the key to start position and touch the terminal to power and see if it winds, if you where worried put a fuse inline on the wire then touch it to power.

    update

thanks for the elec diagram, had seen this before but thanks for posting was helpful

my black wire comes direct from the trigger of the solenoid off the starter motor disconnected, doesn't seem to be part of the original loom.
found another wire in battery compartment red/brown which according to the elec diagram comes off starter relay disconnected. this cable travels from starter relay to ignition switch branches off to fuse box under seat then onto battery.

i will connect these two wires to see if the starter will turn or not. Or i will charge from the battery this wire going directly to the solenoid and see if anything happens if not i suspect a damaged starter motor. getting closer just need time to investigate further. if this fails i will prob pull out the starter motor and replace with new. car has been sitting around a while so maybe the contacts are no good. thx for the suggestions, much appreciated

    Def Td5 start issues

Starter will usually click if it’s faulty they are pretty trouble free apart from clicking solenoid
Just throwing parts at it maybe expensive
Get a Nanocom on it to see what the security status of the ecu is

    update

i think i may have two problems not 100% sure but think the starter could be gone and wouldn't mind buying a new one to rule out the starter and have a new starter (not knowing the condition of the old one). Someone has messed with the wiring, looks like a direct wire from the trigger has been brought into the battery box area, the other starter relay wire is coming into the battery box area as well and with all the connectors i think the relay i removed thinking it was for some spot lights may have been for the starter. tossing up idea of buying new starter, have new alternator which needs to go in as well and whether i do the lot myself or take to local independent LR guy. also ordered the egr delete which has arrived. decision time
