    Advancing timing 1.6mm procedure

Ive been thinking advancing timing on my 200tdi. Has anyone done this? I believe advancing timeing to 1.6mm of lift is the magic figure? Has anyone done this? Im chasing the procedure and i do have a dial guage kit.
What is the procedure. Im thinking set motor to 1 tdc. Install bellhousing locking tool. Because prior locking motor at 1 tdc i would install the dial guage at back of pump it would show me lift at tdc which should be 1.54 with locking pin inserted. Hence forth advancing the pump clockwise to achieve a pump lift of 1.6mm on the guage with the crank locked would work?
The reason i ask is that i tried this procedure on a 300tdi auto and the car didnt go any better.

    Advancing timing 1.6mm procedure

Insert the dial gauge. Rotate the engine and just before TDC on cylinder 1’s compression stroke you will see the gauge not moving. Set gauge to zero. Rotate until TDC. Use the slot Aligned with the clutch housing drain to know you are at exactly TDC. See what the lift is on the dial gauge. Loosen injection pump sprocket bolts and turn big Center nut until you are at 1.6 mm on the gauge. Tighten sprocket bolts.

Spin engine twice and recheck the lift.

Oh. One thing. If it is a Defender 200TDI you need to remove the oil filter housing. There is not enough space for the gauge with it in place. It is just a couple of bolts but you need the gasket.

Hi red 90 have you done the procedure? The procedure you mention is exactly what i did to my disco but the performance was little dissapointing. What was your experience? When you find zero and wind forward to 1.6mm it seems like the dial went around twice then the pump locking pin went into its spot. So it seemed the lift was 2.56mm. Went for a ride. It sucked so i just left it with standard setting of locking pin which seems to me 1.56mm i guess. How did you go with fuel settings after 1.6mm lift?

The timing is just to get it right. When it is off you lose power in both directions.

Adding fueling is a completely different and more complex discussion.
