2.4 PUMA - Cracks in Exhaust Manifold, is this common place?

    Guys,

During a recent service, I was told that mine a hairline crack in my Exhaust manifold. Just wondering if this is a common problem & if so, what causes it and what sort of $$ would one be up for?

Is it actually a crack in the manifold? or ....
a crack in the heat shield / heat shield bracket, which is very common on the 2.4lt

The exhaust manifold on both the 2.4 / 2.2lt are a decent thick solid looking item and was one thing i did like over the previous model TD5, it would surprise me if they are failing.
But random failures do happen all the time with any vehicle and any part.
    Regards

Thanks for replying Darren.... Yeah, not sure until I have a closer look. I'm only going by what the Service Mechanic told me. To be honest, I can't really tell from the sound of the engine. The mechanic reckons he can tell but I can't - just sounds normal to me. I've other peoples cars that have a leaky exhaust manifold and u can easily tell but not with mine - the turbo whistle is quite obvious though.

If there is an actual crack - what's the possible effects long term on the engine?

Actual long term effects of a cracked manifold... ?
    Turbo drops off, nothing major.

As for repair, a good chunk of the cost would be in the removal and refit.
if replacement is uneconomical, repair of the casting could be done by any competent boilermaker- they’d usually vee the crack out, preheat and weld or braze it up, then cool it as slow as possible. So 15min welding, 45min prep and crack testing etc, and the cool down, billable at the workshop rate.
Maybe a $300-400 for the boily’s job, plus mechanics labour both sides? Ask locally for your expected cost. It might be cheaper to source a new part.

LR004489 is the part number you seek (manifold, exhaust). Interestingly, same part number for 2.2 and 2.4, if I'm not mistaken.

    LR004393 is the gasket.

    BLIMEY!
First price I found 495 GBP for genuine, 388 GBP for Britpart.

    Ouch.

You could do a real basic log manifold out of steam pipe at home and buy / keep the stick welder as well, for that kind of coin!

Yeah, I wonder how long they would last for and would they even fit ?? I've only dealt with these guys once, (well I actually bypassed them and dealt with the manufacturer) and had no problems but that was for something different. Other than that dealing I don't know much about Alliexpress, what sort of experiences have people had with them?
