Puma transfer case on the way out?

					Hi all,
Towards the end of a long drive home yesterday, my defender started whining louder and louder. It would only happen when in gear with some pressure on the accelerator. Coasting in gear=no noise, clutch in=no noise.
Upon arrival I had a look and the transfer case was covered in oil, as was everything behind it.
This morning I dropped the oil out of the transfer case expecting it to be empty but it still had a fair bit of oil (stupidly tipped it out before measuring it). What was in there was a metallic sludge along with the usual tiny bits of swarf. I filled it back up and went for a drive, the noise is still there.
 Any ideas?
I presume I'm looking at an expensive repair/replacement?

Happened to a mate of mine in his 2014 Puma last weekend on his way to Melbourne. He’s careful w maintenance and fairly gentle on the car, tows a light trailer now & again.
Started getting noisy near Goulburn and felt as though it was winding up, he stopped, checked oil level in trans, it was down a bit but not much and also a bit hot. He topped up w good quality specd oil, went for a run and all was quiet again. He carried on to Melbourne fine but, on his way home she got hot & ground to a halt.
There were busted teeth in the trans case and the spline on the shaft stripped.
$3k+ for a reco trans + shaft + fitting. Ouchies

			Similar issue

					Hi there
I may have a similar issue. 2008 model
Noisy under load and more noticeable in 5th and 6th at speed.
Mechanic has cleaned up and added thicker oil.
Will drive as normal and wait for noise to return and take back for inspection.
Then probably have to fix properly.

After more research and talking to a mechanic, it sounds like a bearing is going/gone. It’s getting pulled out next week to confirm and inspect the rest of it, then comes the big decision of what to do.. ATB perhaps?...
