    Oil leak/ spray? Help please

    I lifted the bonnet today, only to find what looks like oil/carbon sprayed up onto the underside of the Bonnet, on some pipes and maybe on the inlet manifold housing?????

    It is all on the left hand side of the engine (if you’re sitting in the car)

    Anyone tell me what I’m looking at and has anyone seen this before?


    I think it is time I found a service manual for the car.

    Alimony forgot. It’s a 2012 def110 2.2tdci.

    Is there any oil running down the font of the block?
    There is a black cap on the font of the block on the rhs which has a tendency to leak. Its common and easy to fix.

    No that I can see. It is only on that black manifold roughly between what looks like the middle two cylinders.

    After a little reading I reckon there’s a good
    Chance the inlet manifold seals are toast. Seems like a simple enough job. From the reading I’ve done, one should also look at injector seals at the same time.

    Any advice on the later? Are specialist tools required?

    Going by the oil on the bonnet I'd suggest it is the vacuum pump. I had a leak from the inlet manifold and all it did was to put some oil up around the injectors. The main dealer changed the injector seals which of course did not solve the problem. Oil from the manifold seals will stay fairly local on the block and drip on to the ground. It will go on to the pipe work and the area of one or two injectors near the leak. It does not have the force to create the oil pattern you have on the underside of the bonnet. This is a classic symptom of the vacuum pump seal going.
    If you examine the rear of the vacuum pump where the pipe exits it you should see where the oil is coming from.
    By the way it is not a difficult job to change the manifold seals if you need to.

    Give it a good degrease then run it.
    Should be obvious after that.
    Is it still running ok?

    I agree with spudfan. Vacuum pump more than likely. Clean it up and take it for a decent drive then check it again. The location might be more obvious of is cleaned up

    Is a vacuum pump seal replaceable or is a whole new pump required? I may have the same problem.

    When it happened to me the vacuum pump was changed. Mine was replaced with a "Wabco" unit.
    Here are some price comparisons.
    These are for the 2.4 engine
    LR014973 | Vacuum Pump Assy 2.4 Tdci Def - Land Rover Part LR014973
    These are for the 2.2 engine
    LR077798 | Superceded Land Rover Part LR077798.
    Make sure it comes with the gasket.
    I did not know that the 2.2 had a different vacuum pump to the 2.4
