Thanks. I don't have my manual with me so I'll just leave the bolts in for now like you suggested and take it off later.

The bolts on the transfer case end have a retaining ring.

EDIT EDIT NOTE: On looking at the pic i see someone has removed the retaining ring, if it was you, put it back as it stops the bolts from hitting the case

Thanks Dazza. I just got back from a test drive and saw your post. That's what I did. The retaining ring/ cir clip is there, I just moved it back hoping that I could remove the bolts but couldn't. I just did what weeds suggested and put washers on the bolts and tightened them up.
The high frequency vibrations have all but gone, perhaps completely. I can't be completely sure as it's the only td5 I have ever driven. It feels much better now anyway.

And if I could humbly offer some recently acquired wisdom in return to anyone interested...... don't commence non urgent work on a vehicle that you need to get to work in the morning that's in the driveway blocking in your misseses vehicle that she needs for work in the morning, late in the afternoon as it's getting dark when tea is just about ready and you don't have your manual with you.
