    Flasher Problem

    I have a 1999 TD5 Defender Extreme.

Today my flashers stopped working after I had connected (and later disconnected) a trailer although that may be coincidental. If I turn on the hazard switch all four lights flash and the flasher unit makes a nice, steady tic-tic. If I use the turn indicator switch nothing happens. To troubleshoot this I:

    1. checked the fuse - OK
    2. checked that there was voltage at the fuse socket - OK
    3. removed the switch unit from the steering wheel and checked the turn switch with a multimeter - OK
    4. checked there was 12V at the turn switch connector (when ignition was turned on) - OK

so it seems that somehow the wiring from the turn switch connector to the flasher unit must be faulty - I cannot think of anything else that would cause the symptoms I describe. Not sure how I am going to track that down but before I start pulling everything apart to get to it does anyone know of another possible cause?

Also, can anyone provide a link to the wiring diagram for my 1999 TD5 Defender Extreme please?

    Thanks, Howard

    Flasher Problem

It is much more complicated than the Series 2A I had Flasher Problem

Looking at it, it seems the turn switch MUST be the fault so I will disassemble it and check it again.

Could be the hazard switch. The turn signal power goes through it separately from the hazard light power.

    Thanks Red90.

I had another look today, took off the fuse cover near the gear lever and pressed each of the relays. Turned on the ignition and the turn switch - got a buzzing noise, like a relay rapidly switching on and off. Tried the hazard lights and they worked fine. Felt the relays while the buzzing noise was there but could feel the vibrations through all of them so could not isolate one of them as the cause.

Unplugged each of the three left most (yellow) relays and plugged them back in different positions. The turn indicators now work! None of those relays are shown as related to the hazard/turn lights but maybe one is. I could unplug each in turn and see if any of them causes the turn indicators to stop working again. It could be a faulty relay or it could be dirty contacts so I will have to do more investigation but for the moment I am able to use the car again.

You've probably found the ignition relay that allows the ignition switch to carry only a small load. Yellow LR relays are notorious for failing after a while.
