    Td5 sluggish & surging

    Hi all

I have had a performance issue with my mild chipped Td5 for sometime. Some days it’s fine but other days it just has no power when you plant the loud pedal nothing happens and then all of a sudden it is like the turbo just cuts in and off it goes! When it’s running normally it’s great, it will easily keep up with our 2.2 puma.

Today however I had to drive in heavy traffic in mainly 60 & 70 Kph zones and up some steep hills and it just seemed to have no power. I was constantly changing down to get sufficient revs and road speed to keep up with the traffic flow... we live in the country so this type of driving is somewhat rare for us.

It has always been serviced by the same independent and they say there are no errors being logged.

My guess is there is a leak in a hose somewhere or maybe the I/c.

    Anyone have a different suggestions?

    Cheers

First stop would be the MAF sensor, it can die and not throw an error. If you have a nanocom plug it in and see if the airflow readings change. Unchanging values around 4 mean its stuffed. Alternatively unplug the the sensor and go for a drive, if the problem goes away then it’s the sensor.

    cheers

    Thanks Steve

No nancom but will have a go at unplugging and go for a drive and see what happens!

Split in the inter cooler hose or oil in the injector harness? Worth checking.

Is it blowing any black smoke when down on power?
Could be wastegate related, most likely sticking open.

    Hi Paul

No more smoke than normal and only under hard acceleration.

I can’t see any leaks or splits so have booked it on for someone smarter than me to have a good look Td5 sluggish & surging.

    Thanks Nemo

Had a new pump a while ago and an airflow meter. It’s intermittent, some days are fine others will be challenging! Had this one from new MY99 and started this behavior maybe 4 years ago, it was manageable at first now it is getting difficult to get enough useful revs on occasion particularly on hills or with a load. Taking off at the lights it will just bog down loose all power and then after a while (seems like minutes!!) will take off as if the turbo has just cut in. There are no errors logged.

Sounds like the injector washers need replacing , if it has been sitting overnight does it fire up straight away?
Another symptom is cavitation noise from the pump when you first turn ign on without cranking

Yup fires first time, always has. No other issues that might be related.
