Excess turbo noise (whooshing air) - turbo hoses? Anything else? (Puma 2.4)

    Hi all,

Just got going on a trip and got about 1.5 hours out of Sydney when started to hear excess turbo noise (loud whooshing that gets stronger with the turbo spooling up) when anywhere above 2000 revs - thinking it is likely hoses as know they are apt to go (still on stock ones from 2011 I assume with 90k on them) but couldn't find anything with a spray bottle and some soapy water.

Seems the sound is only really present when under load - definitely isn't prominent at idle or throttling the truck at rest.

Have done a search but was wondering if anyone had any other tips to diagnose or if it potentially sounds like another issue?

Car has yet to lose any power or throw a code so hoping I can get it home.

    Appreciate the help.

When one of the intercooler hoses goes you will know it, as it will have the power of a series land rover. It will be the one above the steering column if it is the hose as one of the knuckles will rub on the hose. You are lucky, i only got 40k before mine went and I was 6 hours west of Brisbane.

Apart from that I can't really help, hopefully someone will be along soon who can.

I had similar drama few years ago on our 2.4
Hose had rubbed a hole from the steering linkage Uni

Tried some rescue tape which worked for less than 10munutes

I only had to drive Cairns - Cooktown less than 300km
As long as you drive it like a 1983 Pulsar with a broken accelerator cable you’ll be fine!

Just tickle it along get home and then put on a set of good quality silicone hoses

Rescue tape didn't work on mine at all as the roadside mechanic ripped it further.

Just don't use too much accelerator and you should be able to get close to about 80km/h, mine seemed to get worse the higher up the gears you go.

If you have a can about the right size of the hose you could try putting it over the hole and then the rescue tape over the can.

I ended up getting mine and the camper trailer towed back from Roma to Brisbane on the bed of a flatbed, best fuel economy out of the defender ever that trip home.

Haven't found the culprit yet (assuming it'll be where it rubs the steering column) but will give that a shot if so. Thinking that and/or a hose clamp over the split should limp us home!

    Cheers

Had an issue with a cracked exhaust once that started that way, then got quickly worse resulting in a backpressure problem severely impacting power. Not on a Puma mind you, but thought I'd share.

Mine has whistled a bit taking off in first and second but then the whistle disappears, since we got it. I thought it was normal. I have heard of D3s cracking the manifold. No idea if I have a real problem.

Mine has this issue as well and it does have a cracked exhaust manifold. Will be getting it replaced in the new year at some point....

They usally blow at the elbow on the inlet manifold. Will not show soapy water test until on boost.
It is very difficult to see, try and get someone to stall load the engine with you liste ing at the lh engine bay.
