Defender 10P possibly going with a 16P head

    Hi There,
So I have acquired a 10P block which by all accounts was overhauled recently...… possibly. So far stripping it down everything does look quite good. Wit the block came what I believe to be the 16P head, this head has the pressure pipe external and going across the inlet manifold, according to other posts this should be the case.

Interestingly the head has the black top injectors installed which I believe to be injectors out of a 10P head.

The engine in my Defender is ok, no real issues apart from a huge rear main oil seal leak. Plan is to overhaul / check the 10P block I have just acquired, my Deefer presently has a 10P installed so this SHOULD bet relatively easy, however why should I make it easy for myself. How difficult will it be to install the 10P block, 16P head and the 10P injectors? Reading other posts I might be better off installing the 16P Green injectors, comments seem to say the engine goes better and is more fuel efficient, any other comments?

Also reading other posts I'm going to need a later ECU and a set of green injectors, is it really worth it?

Am I just better sticking with the 10P block, and getting the 10P head serviced and using the best set of black top injectors I can out of the 10 I now have, opinions please.

    Cheers Marty

It will all work perfectly, the black top injectors match the mapping and all the electronic inputs from the original 10p equipped engine/ head, so basically all you need to remember is the 16p heads use different rocker gaskets and fuel pressure regulator.
The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Hi Justin,
"Rocker cover gaskets"...… are you talking about the cam cover gasket? I thought the cam cover gaskets were the same. Also found that the injectors installed were actually green top ones after I cleaned them up properly, the only black top ones I have now are in my own Deefer.

Also found the oil pump bolt loose and screwed out a couple of complete turns, lucky find that was.

    Cheers Marty

The EU3 (16p) engines have different shaped half moon seals at the rear of the rocker cover.

    Hi There,
I'm looking for an ECU "aficionado", I'm wondering in an ECU with the part number MSB 101181 will be the right ECU for a TD5 manual with green top injectors, or is this the earlier ECU that goes with the black top injectors. I know this one is out of a manual NOT an auto so that part is right, just need to know about green v black injectors. Please an thank you for any responses.

    Cheers Marty

Can't remember injector colors, but all msb ecus are for the early eu2 motors, they will not run at The best on an eu3 at all

I have seen one myself, and have heard of a few others that have had the eu3 style rocker cover gasket on an eu2, whether someone has put a mismatched cam carrier on or not I don't know, but always best to make sure before purchasing the gasket

Mind that there's a difference between the injector rockers of 10p vs 15p/16p. In the Td5 workshop manual, Land rover warns explicitely not to use a 10p-14p rocker shaft assembly in a 15p-19p engine because 'the stroke of the EU3 injectors has increased which requires the rocker to articulate over a greater angle'. It is OK however to use a later version in an earlier engine.
