The blanking plate fits after the heat exchanger and before the EGR. It's a PITA to fit but doable. The solid blanking plate will cause your ECU to throw a fault code and will go into limp mode. The blanking plate with at least a 10mm hole will allow enough gas to pass into the EGR to not throw a fault at the same time restrict the amount of recirculation into the intake to have some positive effect. Why people do the retune is simply it turns off the EGR so no gas passes through and no need to get the tools out. If you blank it physically or by turning off the EGR, soot builds up in the heat exchanger and inlet of the EGR. If you reverse it, that soot build up goes into your intake when it breaks loose.
I'd be very surprised if you can fit this plate to the Ranger without throwing a fault code the same as the Defender. The ECU and emissions on both engines are the same.
