Safety Devices 8 point Roll Cage

Anyone had experience with installing a Safety Devices 8 point roll cage into any 110?

Looking at getting one from Rover Craft.......from the UK

Would be interested if anyone has done the same or even a 6 point cage?

This photo is just of the net, but it shows a 6 point system, the 8 point system has an additional roll bar just behind the driver seat internal, which is bolted to the outside cage!project-venture-by-east-coast-defender4653JAYG.jpg

I have six point cage on my defender

The extra 2 points are internal roll cage and thus illegal....(I think.

Just let you know the roll cage can cause cracks on the aluminum body. At least mine has done so. I believe its becuase the defender body is not square....but the roll cage is square and has a much finer tolerance......

    Cheers

Is the vehicle to be road registered? Check with RMS as to whether roll cages are permitted. A friend has had an Appendix J historic racing car in his shed for years. He stopped racing because he objected to the never ending regulation and increasing costs associated with CAMS and the little Hitlers. He recently started rehabilitation work on it to put it on the road as an occasional driver. TMR told him the roll cage was a no-no and needed to be removed for registration.

I fitted them full 8 point cage to my 2004 TD5 110 in the UK, where it meets the Eu regulations. I couldn’t tell you what the Aussie regulations are, sorry. Safety devices strongly recommend the fitting of foam padding to the internal roll bar, if you are going down that road.

I have had it for about 10 years now, and has not caused me any problems, other than the front bar below the screen needs removing to take the bonnet off. (Maybe not such a bad thing) i fitted it myself, and it took a week or so to do.

The thing needs to be bolted together with lots of slack in the bolts, and then carefully wound up all the way around, but i use it to carry all sorts. I routinely carry my ATV on top of it, as the cage is bolted to the chassis. Again i have not been stopped by the UK law, but cant say about your guys...

let me know what sort of info you are looking for and i will see if I remember what i did, and how i did it!

    Thanks all for your responses!

I didn't even think about the legality, will ring the NSW technical hotline and ask. They were always very helpful when doing an engine conversion in my old military series III.

It would be very disappointing if it was not legal since the addition of a roll cage, especially in a Defender, is only going to make a roll over more safe. Head injury due to an internal cage is a concern, but the addition of padding etc would help.

You only have to look where you windscreen meets the roof, drive over some decent corrugations, and you realise how weak the roof structure really is. A slow roll you'll be ok, but a tumble and you'll be meeting your maker!

If you think you are ok, just google Defender crashes and look at images!

Id always known they weren't great in crashes and thought it would be cool to put a cage on but wow looking at some of those images...

Now the cost of a cage is seeming a lot more reasonable.

Keep us updated how you go - now much more intrigued to hear about the outcome of legality + cost etc.

From memory as long as it's a "roof rack" it's legal...

My friend's Appendix J racer has a full internal roll cage a la Nascar. Maybe the TMR don't like internal roll cages in street registered cars. He would have to cut up the cage to remove it. He is going to try registering it at a suburban office and not mention the cage.

    my experience

Hi, unless things have changed NSW is very difficult re roll cages as I have been down this road before re my rally cars. They don't seem to mind if it is not in front of the driver inside--so guess as mentioned that if outside and you say a roof rack support then might be ok. They will permit a full internal cage, with padding but then they will probably say it is rally car and insist on rally car rego and not able to drive normally on the street.
Agree it does not make sense re having a safer car--they say it interferes with forward vision! Lots of tradie types have roof racks with front legs so guess go that way.

That was my understanding too. Don't refer to it as an external roll cage, it's a chassis mounted roof rack.

It can be done. Mine is a chassis mounted roof rack. A couple of times Police at RBT's have commented on the 'great setup'.

Don't think Landybitz do them anymore but -
