    ECU and performances problem

    Hi all

My Td5 recently had its ECU replaced with a second hand genuine unit after some major performance issues.

Until recently seemed to be running fine albeit without the performance of the mild tune on the previous unit.

I have now noticed that on steady throttle it will occasionally but smoothly (no massive jerking lose of power) seem to loose power and speed and will equally smoothly pick up again.

The only thing changed was the ECU but I guess sensors or throttle could also contribute.

Anyone had any similar experiences and how did you resolve this?
    Cheers

I experienced this with standard tune on a 99 td5 defender with standard factory ECU. I found it particularly when trying to accelerate smoothly up a mild incline, or around a corner. Mines a heavy 130.

The ECU/engine behaviour was improved by a mild tune to an NNN ECU from Jose @ TD5 inside ... but not completely eliminated.

    Thanks towe0609

Mine is a 99 model also (10P engine) and is now back to standard tune as i said earlier but I propose to go back to a mild tune but would like to eliminate this problem first.

Like you i appear to get the issue when accelerating smoothly whether it be up an incline or a corner or alone the flat. I also suspect going over rough patches in the bitumen, which is what made me suspect sensors. We live on a corrugated dirt road but I am unable to determine if it happens along here as it it just too subtle and the road too rough but it probably does.

Pretty sure there will be no errors thrown up but will get that checked at some point.

It does seem to be getting slowly worse.

I have our Puma in for service next week at the same place that swapped out the ECU on the Td5 so will ask the guys what they think could be the issue.
    Cheers

I conclude its just part of the standard tune / fuelling regime ... I doubt my issues have any other cause. I have swapped back from the remapped NNN to standard ECU and the behaviour returns without anything else changing. If its the same issue ... and sounds like it is (its only momentary right ... maybe a second or 2 of 'delay') ... I'd be going straight to a remap as the solution if it worries you.

Alternatively change to a tdi as your daily driver where there is no silly computer deciding whats good for you. I prefer driving my tdi for this very reason .. the engine is less refined, but it has better driving 'feel'.

Yes correct, it’s only momentary. I’ll chat with the guys and when I can afford it go for the mild tune again. I do share my daily drive between my 300Tdi and the Td5. The Td5 is a Ute and Tdi a wagon :-)

Well I think I have solved the performance problem. I had a snorkel sock as a pre cleaner and even though I had cleaned this in turps and re-oiled (with the correct expensive oil) at the last service it was almost totally blocked (we live on a dirt road). I removed this and all the symptoms seem to have gone!

Will monitor for a while longer but I will probably removed the one from the Tdi as well.

Seemed like a good idea at the time but recent reading suggests not a good idea....

    Any thoughts?
