    Bulkheads - key differences

    G'day all,

What are the key differences between Defender/County bulkheads - between the County, Tdi, Td5 and Puma (no chocolates for saying the Puma's don't have flap vents!).

I believe there is a difference in terms of the mounting location for wiper motors between Tdi and Td5, but also interested in any other significant differences.

    Thanks in advance.

    Tim.

All Australian "Counties" have the V8 bulkhead, whether they came with the V8 or Isuzu (no others sold). These came both with and without under windscreen vents.

I believe all Defenders have the bulkhead originally intended for the four cylinder engine.

Both types had ongoing changes during production, including, for example wiper positioning, but these rarely happened at model changes, and mostly would consist of additional or missing holes and brackets.

Is the fact that a "County" has A/C or not the deciding factor on front vents ??

Of course, each motor necessitates holes drilled in different spots to mount the associated ancillaries, but let's ignore that for now.

110 and Defender Tdi are pretty similar, Tdis have some bracketry to fit the large wiring plugs that attach the loom to the rear of the vehicle to the bulkhead loom - 110s do not. Early 110s have washer jets on the top of the bulkhead where the opposite-hand-drive wipers would otherwise mount, meaning they lack a hole in the centre where later vehicles had a central washer jet. Early 110s also had a lever behind the grille to open the bonnet, meaning no bracket in the driver's footwell to mount the bonnet latch cable. Whether or not a 110 has vents (County trim level) doesn't actually change the bulkhead, a County just has plates glued on to seal the vents up and allow mounting of the plastic covers. Tdi and TD5 bulkheads are different again, the Tdi and 110 wiring looms pass through a central hole - this is not present on TD5 bulkheads as the loom passes through the oval tunnels either side just below the bonnet. There are other TD5 differences like captive threads to mount various bits and pieces, as well as other things I've forgotten I'm sure.

Pumas... don't know, never replaced one, but they would be significantly different where the dash mounts and all the AC holes etc. as well as actually having no spot for vents.

All except the Puma are easily interchangeable.

    Thanks for the comprehensive response.

Perentie, I would assume uses a County/110 bulkhead. Are there any peculiarities for the 4BD1 in terms of loom or mounting brackets?

Yes, just a 110 bulkhead - no differences for the Perentie (except perhaps SRV-SFs, but I've never had a good look at one of them). Different holes are drilled to fit the relays and EDIC motor, but not a big difference. 4BD1 110s also just used the V8 loom, power wire for the coil (V8) being used instead for the EDIC motor. Perenties used the V8 loom augmented with the blackout light wiring, making it a bit of a special part.
