Recenlty i went up and down mt baw baw. Great fun and icy. Ive got the defender set up with 35 inch muddies x12.50 wide tyres. Going up was fun. But going down was white knuckle.
Before going down i let tyre pressure to 20 psi. I had no chains and this is before snow season. The road was iced up, compacted and had fresh snow on it. You know how bad muddies are in the wet....well try ice. It was embarassing...lol i was in low range and all over the place. Next time im going to air down to 5psi for more traction if i have got chains on. Yeah having 50 percent reduction gears was like you might aswell hit your brakes!!!
My advice is have a air compressor and warm clothing for your fingers aswell... and air down as low as you can to get down these hills if you havent got any chains. Mud terrains are not the best on iced rds. Well i guess you dont want to fill the voids in your tyres with ice. Less. Chance in muddies.
Anybody else with ice road experience?
Im thinking about driving dargo high plains rd this weekend!!!
Air up for ice, down for soft snow.

No. Lower pressure is always better. The roads are covered in ice six months a year here.
Proper tyres are the most important factor.
