Question Snapped front Swivel Ball on a '11 Defender 130 PUMA - Is Tyre size the cause?

    Guys....

Been watching/following these guys on YouTube for sometime now and they posted their most recent adventure post after their recent stay in Australia and then returning to Europe to continue their adventure.

Well they didn't get far before before things went really bad.

Check the following video out as it would be interesting to hear what people's thoughts/comments on what they think may have caused or contributed to this breakage

Towards the end, they seem to think that running the bigger 285/75/16 tyres with the larger offset may have contributed to it failing... ???

Not a diff housing , its a swivel ball - easy fixed.
Have not seen that before, probably a Britpart item failed. Tyre size wont be causing that !

Never seen or even heard of this - on other vehicles, yes, but not any Landrover. My guess is overloading plus hard driving on rough roads. Oversize tyres may made made a slight contribution, but I doubt they would be a significant factor.

Was shearing through the neck of the swivel the failure mode that instigated the JLR recall which made a “fix” by bolting on a brace between lower swivel/ axle bolts and the lower swivel pin?

It looks like a Puma 130
I can’t see the remnants of the brace
I’m guessing they didn’t get the recall....

Easy enough fix but Geez that would be a cold arse roadside repair!!!!

Have watch every episode....pretty scary spot where this happened, actually haven’t watch this one but the snippets of info that’s been release across socials covers the whole incident.

Good craftsmanship by the local that did the temporary repair...amazing how the overland community come together.

Either way, pretty sure Leigh is now removing the wheel spacers and has selected some new Toyo’s.

If it had wheel spacers these would have definitely been a contributing factor by increasing the leverage on the neck of the ball.

The brackets are fitted as precaution as the swivel mounting flange was coming away from the main housing. Les Richmond Automotive have video on Facebook of the failure and the recall bracket holding things together-ish.
One I haven’t seen before. First initial thought was a wheel bearing or a king pin bearing. But to find the actual diff housing completely cracked through was something from left field.

So the bracket wouldn’t have been effective/useful in this failure.

RobMaca you beat me to it. I watched this this morning. Pretty horrific stuff. Never seen anything like it and it could well have ended in tragedy. Stills from the couple's video.

    Cheers

    Yeah, for sure!
    Spacer AND larger wheels.
Question is 'how/why it didn't happen sooner' .. not 'how or why it happened'.
