not all over the place, just trying to consolidated all the advice I have received over a number of threads. We are planning to use this defender for a RTW / extended multi year overland trip with young kids. Much easier / safer to replace a head gasket now than on the side of the Pamir HWY. Over a number of threads I have been advised to;
Change big end bearings
Replace sump gasket
Replace head gasket (as a mater of precaution)
Replace the 3 long bolts on the water pump - several suggested upgrade to high tensile
Replace P gasket when changing water pump
Timing belt @ 100K
Coolant system need to be 110%
Low coolant alarm
I would like to keep under bonnet temps down, so Ceramic Coating is an option
I am also looking at cost effective sound deadening / heat proofing the cabin
I realise that I could do nothing - chuck on a roof tent, head off and just deal with things as they come along. And I'm sure we will have to deal with our fair share of issues along the way. In this thread I am simply trying to get some real world feedback from others who have prepared an older defender for extended travel. It may seem to some that I am all over the place - to me I am simply trying gain as much knowledge / experience as possible.
