not all over the place, just trying to consolidated all the advice I have received over a number of threads. We are planning to use this defender for a RTW / extended multi year overland trip with young kids. Much easier / safer to replace a head gasket now than on the side of the Pamir HWY. Over a number of threads I have been advised to;

Change big end bearings
Replace sump gasket
Replace head gasket (as a mater of precaution)
Replace the 3 long bolts on the water pump - several suggested upgrade to high tensile
Replace P gasket when changing water pump
Timing belt @ 100K
Coolant system need to be 110%
Low coolant alarm
I would like to keep under bonnet temps down, so Ceramic Coating is an option
I am also looking at cost effective sound deadening / heat proofing the cabin

I realise that I could do nothing - chuck on a roof tent, head off and just deal with things as they come along. And I'm sure we will have to deal with our fair share of issues along the way. In this thread I am simply trying to get some real world feedback from others who have prepared an older defender for extended travel. It may seem to some that I am all over the place - to me I am simply trying gain as much knowledge / experience as possible.

Getting to know your motor b4 a big ROW trip is not a bad idea. Head and sump off will give you a good view, and some good practice with the tools.

If you want to rebuild the engine, then rebuild it. If not, leave it alone. Don’t do random part rebuilds when there is nothing wrong. More likely than not you will create an issue as you are clearly not expert enough to not accidentally do the wrong thing.

You need to be careful with random internet advice. These are not experts. Just random people chucking up opinions.

I'm a little confused by your heated response? So for you it is all or nothing, full rebuild or leave it alone - that is simply madness.

The collective knowledge on here is worth it's weight in gold. It goes without saying you need to filter all responses and take only the good constructive advise.

I am completely perplexed at to why you would be apart of this forum if you don't agree with "random people" giving their advise? Isn't this the entire point of this community?

I always thought the issue with water pumps is they corrode which leads to them snapping.

That's a slightly bizarre response IMO. Why did you join a forum of random LR enthusiasts if you aren't interested in their opinions? There is an incredible wealth of experience on this particular forum. The task is to listen to them all and filter the responses. The ones that agree are usually the ones that are correct, but if you observe the people over time you will learn that some people know more about some topics than others. It ain't rocket science, especially on the older types. I listen to some people on some topics, others on others, and Blknight on everything. BeeUtey on LPG is also a standard. Sierafery springs to mind as well. There are many here who have a hell of a lot of knowledge they are willing to share, and they give it freely ( Apologies, there is no way I can encompass everyone [bigsad]).

Eventually we might find that you have a wealth of knowledge to share as well.
