Thread: TD5inside CR VNT turbo

Looks like you pinched my Deefer but I don't have LPG.
I have a variable vane turbo, not sure what brand as it was installed some years ago, a bit of black smoke, but never in 3rd-5th. More noticeable at night. The vehicle has all the mods you mention.
There is no lag whatsoever & still get 10l/100k unloaded although this goes to 14l/100k towing 1600kg.
I only say all this as I can't see why different brands of turbo would make any difference when so many other factors come into play.

Thanks David for your reply. The fact that you have no turbo lag at all, is great to hear that it is real and achievable with a VNT. A small amount of black smoke on hard acceleration I could live with.
I have not received a response yet from TD5inside ( I know not to take this personally) but I have been in contact with ‘Storm Tuning’ in the UK, who also supply VNT turbo’s and I think that I might be going that way. They get back to you very quickly and have some pretty impressive videos and reviews.
Head gasket done and now it’s time for more odds and bobs to be serviced and keep doing more homework and preparation for the right choice in
Turbos.

I have read many mostly positive reviews for the Turbo Technics VNT’s on TD5’s but I cannot find any customers reviews with the
CR Turbos option from TD5inside.

Can't help you with that as I'm also a Turbo Technics user, but I think my rear oil seals in the exhaust side have failed so am also interested to know about the Td5Inside offerings as possible replacement.
My understanding is that due to their CNC billet wheels they are more efficient than the older deign Turbo Technics offerings.

Sounds like you do want a VNT/VGT then. To give you context my Td5 has around 15psi a bit off idle and can be at 20psi by 1,500rpm. Huge gains in the low end, good gains in the mid range. Not much different in the top end - at the end of the day the turbo size is the same. To gain top end you need a larger turbo charger but that comes at a cost of low end. Turbo Technics have a few offerings and if you take a look you can find my old thread from a few years ago discussing them and their differences. They have a larger offering requiring a 3" exhaust etc. All depends what you want to achieve.

I get the impression that it’s not such an issue with more ‘customised mapping’ and hopefully the better turbo will also assist in the final outcome.

All comes down to tune and tuner. I've worked with Jose from Td5Inside on my tunes for around 10 years now. I've run smoke free tunes and big smoke tunes. My current tune does smoke a bit - but it's more responsive than any of the other tunes previously, has lowest EGT too and fuel economy remains unchanged. There's a lot written on the subject by others more in the know but the guidance I got from Jose when I asked why it was smoking again was that it's sometimes the best way and the fuel economy, EGT and response proves that. If your not happy with the smoke levels or tune work with your tuner to change that or get a new tuner...
I don't know what effect your LPG system will have on all that though as I assume it's tuned separately and that the two will effect each other - sounds like a headache causing complication... I've played with high performance LPG systems (specifically a supercharged 4.0L I6 Falcon motor) before and it isn't fun and ends in tears - my advice would be get rid of it and reduce your carrying weight and complications.

Does anyone actually have any details or specs on Jose from Td5Insides VNT offerings? I've mentioned to him a few times earlier this year while we were sorting out my tune that I was interested to know and have never had anything back. His website is still in development but some of the old pages accessible through Google don't really have any details e.g. td5INSIDE / performanceINSIDE – td5INSIDE / performanceINSIDE CR turbos VNT . Looking at his Facebook information it seems that there's a few different offerings available.

There's a few pictures of turbo orders from the 'billing offroad show' on his Facebook feed at Td5 Inside / Performance Inside - Home | Facebook check out 12 and 2 July 2019.

He's fairly prolific on FB and Insta, often with photo's of the latest batch of VNT's from CR, posting on the modified Land Rover pages as well as his own.

It's about the only evidence that he still exists! I'm surprised as that's more marketing related but he struggles to catch up on the current sales anyways so marketing for more seems irrelevant.
