How strange. Yes, looks like impact damage not a burn.
Today I was picking up sticks and rocks with my son and doing some burning off. Came back to the Defender to discover this hole in the bonnet. Car was parked a fair distance away from fire but wind had changed and was going in its direction which is why I walked back to move it.
I can only presume it was a red hot ember that landed on it and somehow burnt through. Weirded thing is there are zero burn marks.
It looks more like a bullet hole but no damage in engine bay anywhere.

BB gun ? It's certainly an impact event, not fire.
Sorry about pic - somehow posted without it as I was doing it on my phone.
i honestly can’t work it out.
Its a fairly hefty hole.
That looks very much like an impact. Look underneath the bonnet to see if the metal is curled in.
Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.
I’d reckon it’s an impact from a bullet too. By the time it’s gone through the bonnet, it wouldn’t probably do any further damage. But I’d be looking for the bullet itself lodged in/under part of the engine, or if you can remember exactly where you were, the ground maybe.
I reckon I’d be buying myself a lottery ticket 🎫 You don’t always hear people shooting.
A walk down the paddock on a foggy morning to check on new lambs proved to be interesting one day, when on my return I was confronted by a dead ewe on the track,, shot. Both my mate next door and myself were a bit taken back with this. He’d been shooting from his verandah for years,, never again though.
I agree - bullethole. Possibly at extreme range.

Its either a bullet hole or a small meteor strike , no other possible explanation,
